Fantastic Finish For JCU Women's Swimming & Diving As Final Relay Wins Meet In Berea

The scenario was clearly defined for the John Carroll Blue Streaks entering the final event of their dual meet with crosstown and Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace.

Anything short of a win in the 200 Free Relay would mean a loss to the Yellow Jackets

That meant the Blue Streaks' fate rested on the collective shoulders on Rachel Mizner, Megan Carrig, Emma Atkinson and Maggie Donoghue

Turned it to be a good choice on who trust one's fate. The quartet came through with a big win by a slim margin to help John Carroll produce a 120.5-116.5 victory Saturday in Berea.

Results

Despite a relative dominance in the swimming events, JCU trailed by five points entering the 200 Free Relay. The main culprit was spotting the Yellow Jackets 32 points in the two diving events as John Carroll does not have an active diver on its roster.

Therefore, the points would have to be made up in the swimming events.

Julia Adams started things off with a win in the 1000 Free (11:32.31), and Rachel Libertin (2:03.92) led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 Free that was aided by the efforts of Katie Mathews and Lindsay Eddingfield.

In a portend of things to come, Atkinson swam a strong final two legs in the breast and free in a come-from-behind win in the 200 IM (2:22.27).

Libertin won for a second time in the 100 Fly (1:03.95), as did Adams in the 100 Back (1:02.19).

Yet, when the 200 Free Relay rolled around, the Streaks trailed 112.5-107.5.

The final race began with Baldwin-Wallace holding a lead after the first two legs. Atkinson then delivered a solid third leg, swimming a 26.16 split to give Donoghue the lead heading into the anchor swim. Despite a strong challenge from Lauren Schaefer, Donoghue touched the wall first in 1;46.62, just ahead of Baldwin-Wallace's 1:46.82.

The victory ended John Carroll's regular season at 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the OAC.
