Left On Base Stat Tells Story Yet Again In JCU Softball Setbacks

Erin Riccardi had four hits in JCU's doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan
In a softball box score, the "LOB" line is usually an afterthought. Only when that number reaches double digits does it begin to warrant attention.

John Carroll's left on base number in game one of a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan totalled 12, telling the story of a 4-3 loss in nine innings. When the air left the proverbial balloon, a 9-2 loss followed to send the Blue Streaks to their sixth consecutive loss.

Box Scores:  Game One  /  Game Two

The scene that unfolded Tuesday afternoon at Bracken Field was a contrast of Ohio Wesleyan using the quick strike against the more methodical approach of John Carroll. The Battling Bishops scored all four of their runs by vistue of three home runs. John Carroll had the same amount of hits as Ohio Wesleyan (four) but drew seven walks and reached base on two errors.

The game was tied at 2-2 after seven regulation innings, and would go into the international tiebreaker rule in the extra innings. After both teams failed to advance runners home from third in the eighth inning, Ohio Wesleyan solved the problem in the ninth when, with two outs, Rita Cook powered a two-run home run over the fence in right center.

JCU appeared to be ready to answer in the bottom of the frame. Mackenzie Griffin (Lake Oswego, OR, Lakeridge) doubled home one run, after which the Blue Streaks put runners on second and third with just one out. But the Blue Streaks stalled, leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

The nightcap was settled early on, as Ohio Wesleyan scored five times in the third to break open a 1-1 tie. JCU managed just four hits in the contest in falling to 7-11 on the year
