Women's Tennis Starts Florida Trip With 1-3 Record

Amy Marchlen has posted three singles wins thus far during John Carroll's Florida trip

from staff reports

The John Carroll women's tennis team has faced an interesting array of competition over the first three days of its spring break trip to Orlando, Florida.

On day one, the Blue Streaks faced the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at San Lando Park in Orlando on February 25. Despite a marathon win by Sara Crane (7-6 6-7 13-11) at #1 singles and a solid victory by Amy Marchlen (6-4 6-3) at #3 singles, JCU fell by a 7-2 score.

The Blue Streaks picked up their first victory on day two by defeating Emory & Henry, 8-1. The #1 doubles tandem of Crane and Alison Balestrino won by an 8-4 score, while the #2 doubles duo of Marchlen and Anna Navatsyk rolled to an 8-0 win.

It would be a clean sweep in singles, as all six players won their matches in straight sets.

On February 27, John Carroll was involved in a tight match that fell by a 5-4 score to the side of Alma College. Crane and Balestrino won the only double point for the Blue Streaks with a narrow 8-6 victory, and Crane joined Navatsyk and Marcheln as singles winners.

The Blue Streaks then got a taste of the upper echelon of Division III tennis, as #10 ranked Rollins College blasted John Carroll by a 9-0 score. JCU managed just four game wins in the entire match, with two coming courtesy of the #3 doubles team of Ashley Bauer and Hillary Fulp

John Carroll is 1-3 with one scheduled match remaining.
