Steve Fuelling

Steve Fuelling enters his 3rd season as cross country/assistant track & field coach at John Carroll University during the 2026-2027 academic year. Fuelling was selected for the job in September 2024. 

In his short time at JCU, the Blue Streaks have continued their conference and national level success. In the 2024 cross country season, the Blue Streaks would win their 4th (men) and 5th (women) consecutive OAC team titles. The men’s program would go on to qualify for their fifth consecutive NCAA championships. In 2025, JCU transitioned to the North Coast Athletic Conference, the Men’s Cross Country team would win the University’s first NCAC conference championship. Led by 8 All-NCAC performances including NCAC Runner of the Year, Nate Julien, the Blue Streaks would score a program-record low 24 points. The women’s team would finish NCAC runner-up and place 4th in the Great Lakes Region led by Abby Schroff. Schroff and Sam Su would qualify individually and represent the Blue Streaks at the NCAA Championships in Spartanburg, SC.

On the track, Fuelling has coached 12 individual conference champion performances in two years. During the 2025-2026 track season, the Blue Streak women would win the NCAC Indoor and Outdoor team titles for the first time in school history. School records were also set in the DMR (Dobos, King, Chryst, Schroff), Mile (Vis), 3,000m/5,000m (Schroff). Alyssa Vis would qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the mile for the first time in her career. Abby Schroff would be awarded the NCAC “Distance/Middle Distance Runner of the Meet” for both the Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

On the men’s side, the men would win their first team conference title since 2002. Individually, Sam Su would breakout his during his 2nd year. The NCAC indoor mile and outdoor 1500m champion qualified for the NCAA Indoor championships. Su would contribute to the Blue Streaks Top 10 finish by finishing 5th place in the Mile and earning his first All-American award. For his outdoor campaign, Su would break Alex Phillip’s 1500m school record (3:45.44) at the NCAA finals. Su, only a sophomore, would finish NCAA runner-up in the 1500m.

Before his time at JCU, Fuelling gained Division I coaching experience at both Temple and the University of Illinois, as well as Boise State. While assisting at Boise State, the men would win their first Mountain West cross country championship in school history and the women would place as high as 6th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Steve then went on to be the Head Cross Country/Assistant Track & Field coach at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where he coached several All-Americans at the NCAA Division II level, including middle-distance athlete James Young (3:37.72/1:48.31). Young would win NCAA Mile & 1500m individual titles. Fuelling was named USTFCCCA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020 and 2021. 

After spending three seasons at Academy of Art, Fuelling was named to the coaching staff at the University of San Francisco in August 2021. Fuelling elevated his runners to compete at the NCAA 1st Round Championships in track & field, as well as racing to multiple First-Team All-West Coast Conference Cross Country honors.

Fuelling graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2013, where he was a part of the cross country/track & field program as a student-athlete, which led to him earning his master’s degree from Boise State University from 2016-2018 as an assistant coach. Fuelling has coached for 13 years at both the NCAA Division I, II and III levels.

Steve and his wife Allison reside in Cleveland Heights and are expecting their first-born in September.
