Defense Dominates in a Road Win at Oberlin for Women's Lacrosse

Josephine Lawler became the program's all-time saves leader in the victory

OBERLIN – Every inch was earned, but John Carroll Women's Lacrosse fought hard all the way to go the distance on Tuesday evening.

In a North Coast Athletic Conference road affair at Oberlin College, the Blue Streaks' defense stood strong for 28 minutes and the offense did enough to pave the way for a sixth straight victory.

John Carroll bested Oberlin, 10-5, outscoring the Yeowomen in the second half 6-2.

As part of the excellent defensive effort, goalkeeper Josephine Lawler made history. The senior from Hudson became the program's all-time saves leader. With seven saves tonight, Lawler reached 227th career saves, surpassing Elyssa Zablo's 226 from 2017-19.

Kathleen Cagney opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, beating the goalie from the alley low stickside. The early goal belied what would be a stingy first half.

Oberlin and JCU traded goals slowly, with Cagney scoring JCU's other first-quarter goal en route to a 2-2 tie after 15 minutes. Anna Vaccarelli helped to power the offense in a quiet second quarter, scoring with 11:19 left and then assisting a Cagney goal just 23 seconds later. Oberlin found twine with 25 seconds left, setting the margin at 4-3 JCU at the half.

Just under four minutes into the third, Anna Spitzer found twine on a free-position goal, beating the goalie high stickside. At 8:30, Cagney found space in the slot and hopped to beat the netminder. Two minutes later, a cutting Cagney could not be contained again, leading to an Oberlin timeout with JCU now suddenly ahead by four goals.

The respite didn't help the Yeowomen. Mea Musillo hit Spitzer on a sneaky pass, and the Marcellus, New York native did the rest, sending JCU into the fourth with an 8-3 lead.

The John Carroll defense continued to force Oberlin out of its comfort zone in the fourth quarter. JCU kept the Yeowomen out of the danger areas and when a Yeowomen did get close, Lawler proved to be equal to the challenger.

Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks stayed patient on the offensive end, trimming the clock with long possessions and staying smart with the ball while Oberlin's sense of urgency increased. Abby Cassidy seemed to provide the dagger with 3:56 to play, dodging two defenders in the high slot and scoring low right to up the advantage to an insurmountable six goals.

John Carroll dominated the chances and forced 26 Oberlin turnovers, limiting the Yeowomen to just 16-of-30 on clears. A dominant effort on draw controls, led by Cassidy's team-high six, certainly didn't hurt, either.

Cagney led all players with 5 goals. Emily Van Gorder shined on defense with 6 groundballs. Jill McDonnell, Riley Knapp, and Anna Spitzer all tabbed 2 draw controls. In net, Josephine Lawler notched 7 saves to secure history.
