Softball Splits Sunny Saturday Doubleheader Against Oberlin

OBERLIN, OH. - The John Carroll softball team split with Oberlin on a sunny Saturday afternoon by winning game one and dropping game two. The Blue Streaks are now 9-8 on the year and 1-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).

GAME ONE: (John Carroll - 10, Oberlin - 4)

The bats came alive in game one and it started in the first inning as Jordan Anderson hit a solo home run to left field.

Brynne Smith got hit by a pitch on the following at-bat. Melissa Smith hit her first home run of the season with a deep shot to right field and gave JCU a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, Bella Carcioppolo started off with a bunt down the third base line for an infield single. Carcioppolo stole second base to get into scoring position. Elaina Rodriguez stepped up and singled up the middle to bring Carcioppolo around.

With two outs Oberlin committed an error to keep the inning alive for JCU. The Blue and Gold would capitalize as Anderson singled up the middle to score Izzy Coode and Rodriguez and JCU lead 6-0.

Smith leadoff the third inning with her second homer of the day with a shot to deep center field. Oberlin would get on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning with multiple base hits.

JCU would add a few runs of insurance in the sixth and seventh inning, as Jordan Anderson threw four innings, allowed one run and had 10 strikeouts and improved to 2-2 on the year.

GAME TWO: (OBERLIN - 10, JOHN CARROLL - 2)

In the second game of the twinbill, Oberlin would start off hot by scoring four runs in the first inning and JCU would not be able to overcome the deficit.

Oberlin recorded back-to-back singles to open the game before JCU recorded the first out of the inning. Ava Soldo of Oberlin doubled to left field opening up the scoring 2-0. Caroline Sniffen was due up next and hit a two-run homer.

JCU would get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, as Smith grounded out to the shortstop but Elizabeth Hohlefelder scored. Smith doubled to left field on the next at-bat and Anderson scored to make the score 5-2, still in favor of Oberlin.

Oberlin would add four more runs in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 9-2.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Saturday April 11th hosting Denison at Bracken Field with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
