Softball Scores Two Wins in Florida to Start Season

The Blue Streaks won behind two strong pitching efforts

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – The 2026 campaign started in a great way on Monday for John Carroll Softball.

In the warm Florida air, the Blue Streaks fired up a pair of wins at the Space Coast Complex.

John Carroll slid by Misericordia University, 3-1, and shutout New England College, 4-0, to open the season on the right foot.

Game 1
Emily Graves got the ball to start the season for John Carroll. The senior soon found herself in a jam, loading the bases on two walks and an error with one out. But the Mayfield grad didn't panic, getting a lineout and strikeout to avoid an early disaster.

The next few innings were much less eventful for Graves, thanks in part to a double play in the third and back-to-back flyouts with two aboard in the fourth.

John Carroll scratched across a run in the fifth. Brynne Smith opened the frame with her first collegiate hit. Emily Graves tabbed a bunt single, and Bella Carcioppolo did a job with a sacrifice bunt. Elizabeth Hohlefelder knocked in the season's first run with a liner single to center. Jordan Anderson then made her first big play as a Blue Streak, knocking home a pair with a single on a liner to center.

Graves ran into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Anderson checked into the game and took a bit to warm up, allowing a run on a wild pitch. But the George Mason transfer garnered a swinging strike on a beauty of a 3-2 pitch to strand the go-ahead run.

Anderson experienced no trouble in the seventh, as a 1-2-3 inning finished off her save and ensured Graves' first win of the year.

Game 2
Kristin Dems got the nod in the circle for game two and didn't disappoint. The junior spun an absolute gem, scattering just 5 hits across 7 innings. The Mentor native struck out 9 batters in a masterful performance.

The Blue Streaks did all of their damage in the fourth inning to support the star pitcher.

Isa Crespo laced a double to left field to start off the frame. An error got another runner aboard, and a fielder's choice allowed the game's first run to cross. Hohlefelder and Izzy Cooe tabbed back-to-back singles to send home the second run.

An Anderson sacrifice fly and an Alyssa McPeek single through the left side plated two more unearned runs, which would be more than enough.

The complete game shutout marked the second of Dems' career. The nine strikeouts are a career high.

Next Up
John Carroll will play Concordia College (Minn.) on Tuesday at 4:45 pm, and then play Houghton University under the lights at 7 pm tomorrow.
