Women's Lacrosse Conquers Centre for First Win of the Season

Mary Grace Godleski notched a career-high goal total to lead the way

DANVILLE, Ky. -- In the hunt for their first win of the season, the Blue Streaks dominated today for a great win.

Traveling to Kentucky, John Carroll took on Centre College. After a tough loss earlier in the week for both, each team was determined to bring home a win. Yet it was the Blue Streaks who dominated the game, keeping the lead throughout all four quarters.

John Carroll rolled in a 17-4 conquest over the Colonels.

Mary Grace Godleski kicked off the game with an early goal assisted by Mea Mussilo. The tally was followed up quickly by Abby Cassidy and Anna Spitzer before Godleski put in another to put JCU up 4-0.

Centre scored their first goal at the 8-minute mark, their only tally on the board for a majority of the game. Several shots followed, one saved by JCU's Josephine Lawler and the rest finding the air around the net. Halfway through the first, Riley Knapp found Godleski for her third goal of the game.

The fierce energy carried into the second period, the Streaks attempting several shots, each saved by Centre's goalie Mary Haley. Finally, Kenzie Krom found the back of the net, kicking off a flurry of goals from Mussilo, Knapp, Godleski, and Cassidy to extend the lead.

The Colonels had limited possession of the ball, attempting a few shots that went wide. Lawler made a fantastic save with only a minute left, keeping Centre from advancing any closer to the lead that Karson Martin and Anna Vaccarelli increased to 13-1 going into halftime.

A slow in Blue Streak scoring coming out of the break did not stop the intensity on the field. With Centre battling to get back into the game, the ball was turned over again and again, driving blocks, forcing unanswered shots, and giving Lawler and Haley saves. Spitzer scored again twice, assisted by Vaccarelli and Cassidy, and Stevens found the back of the net right before the end of the period.

With a lead of 16-1 going into the final period, JCU was looking to maintain that dominating lead. They made a goalie substitution, replacing Lawler with Sarah McKallip, who made 3 saves. The Streaks put Haley to work in the opposite goal, making several shooting attempts with Martin and Kathleen Cagney taking the score even higher.

The Colonels found the back of the net 3 times before the end of the game. However, it wasn't enough to deplete the powerful JCU lead, the final score reading 17-4.

Godleski finished with a career-high 4 goals to lead the Blue Streaks. On defense, Mary Wymard tabbed 3 caused turnovers. Hannah Weiss notched 3 groundballs.
