Women's Lacrosse Falters Late Against Yellow Jackets in Season Opener

JCU's offense lost traction down the stretch due to yellow & green cards

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In a back-and-forth season opener, late penalties help Baldwin Wallace walk away with a narrow win.

The air grew chiller as the sun set at Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday evening, setting the stage for what has been a heated rivalry between the Yellow Jackets and the Blue Streaks.

But while John Carroll Women's Lacrosse looked to be in control early in the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets fired off four unanswered goals to earn an 8-6 win to start the season.

A year ago as Ohio Athletic Conference rivals, John Carroll won a 13-9 matchup in University Heights. From the start in this showdown, the 14th in the history of the rivalry, the game was a defensive battle.

The teams shook off the rust in the early going, with each defense standing strong. The Yellow Jackets struck first with the season's first goal at the 12:49 mark. BW's 1-0 lead held throughout the entire first quarter

The first quarter was a defensive battle as the teams exchanged goals. The Blue Streaks were shaking rust off.

Mary Grace Godleski tallied JCU's first goal of the season off a nice helper from Anna Spitzer about two minutes into the second. A few minutes later, Riley Knapp made a nice play to score the season's second goal. BW responded to even the score at two.

The goalies stood strong over the next seven minutes until Kathleen Cagney turned a Kenzie Krom pass into a goal. Just 90 seconds later, BW provided an answer to knot it up at three apiece heading into the break.

John Carroll came out of the halftime break ready to roll. Mea Musillo made a nice first year debut, firing home her first collegiate goal three minutes into the quarter. Less than a minute later, Cagney found twine again thanks in part to a Knapp setup.

At the six-minute mark of the third quarter, BW star Clare Alic broke through, narrowing the deficit to one. JCU's defense stood tough down the stretch despite four yellow cards, with Josephine Lawler standing tall in net.

Vivian Rung opened the scoring on a quickstrike goal off a Musillo pass. But that would be the last time the JCU offense found twine.

Following a BW timeout, Alic won a draw and scored a goal in transition. That turned the tides, as it turned out to be the first of three straight Alic goals. The junior's game winner came on a free position shortly after a JCU yellow card at 2:53. The key insurance goal followed with 41 seconds left.

Cards played a major impact in the game, as JCU was called for nine cards (six yellow, three green) to BW's four. JCU's three cards in the final six minutes limited chances for any momentum-changing offensive efforts.

Lawler played well in net, notching 11 saves. Knapp, Musillo, and Cagney tied for the team lead with 2 points apiece.
