Women's Tennis Fights Hard but Drops to Denison

The Blue Streaks won the #1 doubles spot with Maddie Kavenagh and Evelyn Deren

MAYFIELD, Ohio – The score might not reflect it, but John Carroll Women's Tennis played a close match with one of the top teams from the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Blue Streaks won a doubles match and played close in the top four singles matches against Denison University on Sunday afternoon at Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

John Carroll dropped a 7-0 decision to Denison, dropping to 0-2 in NCAC play.

While the #2 and #3 doubles did not result in any traction for John Carroll, #1 doubles proved to be worth the trip to Mayfield for the assembled JCU fans.

Maddie Kavenagh and Evelyn Deren played a fantastic match atop the doubles lineup. The experienced veterans went toe-to-toe with the Big Red's top doubles squad. Battling to a 6-6 draw, the Blue Streaks and Big Red needed a tiebreaker to decide the matchup.

In the tiebreaker, Kavenagh and Deren showed grit. The JCU duo eked out a 9-7 victory, hyping the assembled JCU fans and the other members of the team assembled at the neighboring court.

While Denison took the team doubles point, John Carroll felt great about taking the #1 doubles match from one of the NCAC's top squads.

The top four singles matches were closely contested. Kavenagh lost a 4-6, 3-6 battle atop the lineup. Deren dropped a 3-6, 3-6 match at #2 singles. Emma Smith fought tough at #4 singles 4-6, 3-6.

The third singles slot featured a pitched battle. Felicity Kolb fell behind with a 1-6 loss in the first set. Kolb forced a tiebreaker, but lost it 5-10 to drop the set, 6-7.

Zoe Nicholas and Lilianna Dixon lost at #5 and #6 singles.
