Field Hockey Captures Important NCAC Win over Allegheny

The Blue Streaks scored a great goal on a penalty corner

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Taking advantage of penalty corners is perhaps one of the most important aspects of field hockey, as the John Carroll faithful experienced on Wednesday afternoon at Schweickert Field.

In an important North Coast Athletic Conference matchup, John Carroll Field Hockey scored on a penalty corner in a huge win over Allegheny College.

The Blue Streaks scored a 1-0 home triumph on a beautiful afternoon, advancing to 2-3 on the year in conference play.

In the early going, the Gators got an opportunity on a penalty corner. But thankfully, the Blue Streaks turned it away. John Carroll got some chances early, including on a Sophia Schultheis shot on goal in the seventh minute. The teams stood tied in shots after the first, 2-2.

With 10 minutes left in the second quarter, Keirra Maxie got a good shot on net, sending in a high shot that nearly beat the goalie. John Carroll tabbed some solid shots in the second, outshooting Allegheny, 4-1.

But at half, the score stood tied.

The third quarter was largely dominated possession-wise by the Gators. But the Blue Streaks managed to take advantage of their significant chance.

In the 35th minute, early in the third, the Blue Streaks struck off a penalty corner. Kierra Maxie fired in a fantastic, hard shot almost immediately after the ball was put in play. Maxie's rocket shot broke the tie and marked her third goal of the campaign.

Spurred on by JCU's goal, the Gators pressed on offense, looking for the equalizer. For the third quarter, Allegheny outshot JCU, 8-1, though Schultheis had a great high chance in the last minute.

The start of the fourth quarter was foul-filled. Allegheny got the better of the chances, but shots on goal were limited.

Allegheny outshot JCU in the end, 12-7, but JCU capitalized on the best chance of the day.
