Fourth Quarter Run Ensures Road Win at Wittenberg for Women's Basketball

Brooke Laub helped to put the game out of reach late

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Strong play in the paint ensured a second straight win for John Carroll Women's Basketball.

In a noon tipoff pushed forward by incoming weather, the Blue Streaks scored 42 points in the paint while turning 18 Wittenberg turnovers into 23 points.

Thanks to the 65-55 victory over the Tigers, the Blue Streaks advance to 16-2 on the year, 5-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

John Carroll rolled out of the gates in the early going. Brooke Laub and Carmen Heuker buried early triples to set the tone. An Ava Ryncarz jumper quickly set the margin to 10 points near the halfway point of the quarter. Brooke Laub nabbed a 3-pointer and later grabbed a steal that she dished to Graci Semptimphelter for a fastbreak layup, setting JCU up after the first, 17-9.

Carly Perusek led the charge coming out of the quarter break with a pair of layups. Points in the paint proved to be the theme of the quarter, as JCU continued to stay in front. Wittenberg chipped away late, though, with a 7-point run to finish the half. JCU held a 32-27 advantage heading into the break.

The Tigers hit a second chance 3-pointer on the first possession of the second half, and it was suddenly just a 2-point game. The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, as the Tigers remained close the whole way. Success in the paint ensured that JCU stood on top heading into the fourth, 45-42.

A Ryncarz bucket at the 7:31 mark began a 10-point run by JCU that proved to be critical. Perusek, Semptimphelter, and Laub all contributed shots to power the way to a 57-47 lead. Wittenberg never really recovered, and five points by Laub in the final 65 seconds ensured that no comeback effort would be forthcoming.

Perusek guided the scoring for JCU with 15 points plus 9 rebounds and 5 steals in an excellent all-around effort. Brooke Laub thrived with a season-high 14 points and 5 assists.
