Men's Soccer Commemorates Wenzler's Warriors Night with a Victory

Andrew Massucci's hard-earned goal defined the triumph for JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a night celebrating the life of the legendary Chris Wenzler '90, the Blue Streaks played in a way that would have made him proud.

John Carroll Men's Soccer played with passion in a strong showing at Don Shula Stadium to finish out the 3-game homestand to start the season.

The Blue Streaks notched a 1-0 conquest of the Bethany College Bison on Thursday to advance to 2-1 on the year. The annual night that pays tribute to Wenzler -- a major advocate of the soccer program, a mentor to countless Blue Streaks, and a JCU Athletic Hall of Famer -- was certainly a success.

"It always means a lot to me personally and the boys. Although most of them weren't around Chris, they can feel how important he is to our program and everything we do," said Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06, '25G. "From the stickers to the Wenzler's Warriors hashtag to the Chris cutout, it's extremely important to the Men's Soccer program to keep his legacy alive and remember what he stood for."

The hard-working Andrew Massucci continued to make a huge impact tonight. Louis Roseberry sent a wonderful free kick into the box, and Massucci headed in the ball on a marvelous play. An example of being in the right place at the right time, Massucci's willingness to fight for position and being aggressive in the right spots paid off.

"Massucci is a great example of what Chris stood for: Being gritty and working hard, including doing the dirty work when no one is watching," said Mladenovic.

The Blue Streaks controlled much of the action the rest of the period. JCU tallied four more shots down the stretch, keeping up the pressure on the visitors.

John Carroll continued to possess the ball for much of the first portion of the second half. But besides an early Luke Hutton shot on goal, neither team mustered any shots on net in the first 25 minutes of the half, despite an indirect free kick for JCU and a close-in free kick for Bethany following a yellow card for timewasting in the 72nd minute.

The action picked up for John Carroll late, though, as the Blue Streaks created some promising opportunities, but nothing found twine. Bethany also hit a couple chances, but nothing came of them.

For the match, JCU outshot Bethany, 17-6. Brenden Moher enjoyed his second straight clean sheet of the year, the 13th of his JCU career.

"At the end of the day, we want to get three points, and we need to keep putting together gritty performances and outwork other teams to get the right results," Mladenovic concluded.
