Blue Streaks Face Defeat Against William Smith, Earn Victory Versus Muhlenberg In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH – The John Carroll volleyball team took the trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a tri-match against William Smith and Muhlenberg College for some Saturday afternoon competition. The Blue Streaks came away with a loss against William Smith College, but were able to bounce back in a sweep against Muhlenberg. 

WILLIAM SMITH COLLEGE

In the first set against the Herons, the Blue Streaks went on a 5-0 run led by kills from Kallan Hrics and Mary Kate Sheehan. William Smith would answer with a run of their own to tie the set at eight. From then on, it was back and forth. William Smith would get the upper hand with a 20-15 lead and build off of it to win the first set. 

The second set was a tight contest as both teams answered with valuable plays. For the Blue Streaks, they would record a total of 11 kills led by Natalie Glowe and Grace Jones, who contributed heavily to pull themselves back into action. Another run by the Herons would be too much for the Blue Streaks as they would allow another set loss. 

In the final set, the Blue Streaks came out of the gate with a 4-0 run. Attack errors from William Smith would result in JCU to build their lead. The Herons would answer with a 7-0 run with the score being a 10-5 advantage for JCU. The Blue Streaks battled back to tie the set with kills from Kendra Dziubinski and Natalie Glowe, as well as a couple of service aces from Tess Humphrey, but another run by William Smith would result in a 22-16 lead to get the sweep. 

MUHLENBERG COLLEGE

The second match of the day came against Muhlenberg College. In the first set, the Blue Streaks would finally take advantage to build on a 13-0 run. In the entire matchup, Tess Humphrey recorded 18 assists Muhlenberg willed themselves to get within six points, but a service ace from Grace Jones would allow a big momentum push for the Blue and Gold to take the first set.

Muhlenberg reached an early lead in the second set, but the Blue Streaks would answer with contributions from Olivia Mogyordy, who recorded a total of 15 digs throughout the matchup to help propel JCU to a second set win.

In the third set, JCU would earn the sweep. Hailey Williams would also be a huge contributor in the game as she recorded a total of six kills, as well as Kallan hrics earning eight blocks.

John Carroll will travel to Alliance, Ohio to compete against the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, September 24th at 7:00 PM.
