Men's Soccer Salvages Tie from Cuyahoga Derby at Home

Noah Schmidt scored twice off setpieces on a beautiful evening at Shula Stadium

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The first non-conference version of the Cuyahoga Derby between John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace was frenetic.

The Blue Streaks and Yellow Jackets traded jabs, with JCU enjoying the better of the play in the first half before BW fired back to take the lead in the second half. Thankfully for the hosts, the Blue & Gold found the equalizer late to avoid a defeat.

Still, the Blue Streaks were forced to settle for a tie with the Yellow Jackets. The tie ended a 12-match JCU winning streak in the series, marking the first deadlock between the programs since 2012.

The Blue Streaks got on the board in the 24th minute. Louis Roseberry sent in a marvelous arching free kick into the box. Noah Schmidt managed to get enough of the ball to put the first tally on the scoreboard.

The Blue Streaks looked to add to the lead with five minutes left in the half. Dylan Halm fired in a shot on net, which the Baldwin Wallace keeper stood up to, though Patrick Bohan tapped in the rebound. However, the referees called offsides, negating a nice-looking goal for JCU.

At half, JCU stood in control, outshooting BW, 7-1, including 4-0 on net.

Less than 10 minutes into the second stanza, the Yellow Jackets got on an even footing. Brenden Moher stopped a strong BW free kick, but the ball trickled away from him, and Maguire Alden tapped the rebound in to even the match at one apiece.

In the 67th minute, disaster struck for JCU. Cimi Halilaj drew several JCU defenders to the left side, opening space for a pair of Yellow Jackets to go unmarked. Halilaj found Robbie Rochford open on the right flank, and the sophomore from Copley fired a shot off a Blue Streak and into the low left corner.

And so the Blue Streaks found themselves backed into a corner, trailing 2-1.

While BW enjoyed some momentum, the hungry Blue Streaks pressed and pressed, looking to find the equalizer. A number of long throw-ins looked promising, but the Blue & Gold kept striking out.

Nathan Monastra sent in JCU's most promising chance of the half with a rocket of a shot in the
Dylan Halm also flicked an amazing shot towards the net in the 85th minute, but it also sailed high.

At long last, JCU's efforts finally paid off in the 86th minute.

Dante Rajaie fired in a fantastic free kick and once again, Schmidt played the hero. The Lewis Center, Ohio native headed in a marvelous pass in, evening the score at two apiece.

The final four minutes were hectic, with the teams frantically trading chances. But nothing came of it, ending a back-and-forth match.

JCU finished with the clear advantage in shots, 17-7, including shots on goal, 7-4. JCU played a total of 20 players tonight.
