Baseball Keeps Pace in OAC Tournament Race, Sweeping Wilmington

The bats got the job done in Game 1, while the pitching did the trick in Game 2

WILMINGTON – Finding a way to get the job done.

John Carroll Baseball worked hard and fought past Wilmington College in a Sunday Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Blue Streaks kept up in the OAC Tournament race, winning twice to maintain a tie with Baldwin Wallace in third place, two games above fifth-place Muskingum for the final spot in the tournament.

The Yellow Jackets have already clinched their berth in the postseason thanks to a sweep of the Fighting Muskies. So, the season will fittingly come down to the finale: A Friday road doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace. JCU will need a win, or a Muskingum loss at first-place Mount Union on Saturday. If not, it'll come down to tiebreakers.

But in the meantime, JCU can savor its huge road sweep.

"This team is battle tested," said Manager Bobby Bell. "We seem to play our best lately with our backs against the wall. This team just won't give up, you love to see it."

Game 1
The contestants traded jabs in the opening two innings. John Carroll threw the first jab, scoring three in the first frame. An Erik Daugenti RBI groundout, a Connor Mayle RBI single, and a Chris Bach RBI double set JCU ahead by three runs.

Wilmington quickly responded with five runs in the next two innings. But from there,  Jake Corll settled in, giving the JCU bats time to respond. And respond they did.

In the sixth inning, JCU forced across four runs. Daugenti started the rally, singling and later scoring on a Jack Harmon RBI sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back doubles by Jordan Suvak and Michael Persichetti got the lead back, and a George Haracz single gave JCU a needed insurance run.

The Quakers managed to even the score in the ninth, though Austin Miller stranded the game-winning run at second. With new life, JCU's bats made it a laugher in the 10th inning. Starting again with a Daugenti jolt, JCU put together a 4-run, 4-hit, 2-error inning that put it out of reach. Miller finished things off in the 10th, keeping the Quakers off the board and getting the win.

Chris Bach notched a 3-for-4 game, scoring 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Four stolen bases certainly aided the JCU cause, including one by Ethan Glossa, who inches closer to the program record. Henry Haracz currently holds the record with 25 in 2021, one ahead of Glossa.

Game 2
It was a pitcher's duel in the second game, and John Carroll struck what would be a fatal blow with a 2-run first inning.

A pair of Wilmington errors made it possible, as Dylan Sowers reached on an error and Daugenti singled to put runners on the corners. Daugenti stole second, drawing a bad throw from the catcher, allowing Sowers to score. Mayle then doubled to make it 2-0 JCU.

Kiayuan Baskerville cruised through the first several innings, only allowing one baserunner to reach scoring position in the first four innings. The Quakers got a pair into position in the fifth, but Baskerville stood strong.

In the sixth, Wilmington finally forced out Baskerville, getting two runners aboard with two outs. In trotted Owen Gerba, who doused a flickering flame, getting a flyout to keep Wilmington off the board.

After a scoreless seventh, Frank Freeman allowed the game's first run in the eighth. But a Sowers RBI single in the ninth got the insurance run right back. A JCU error allowed the tying run to get to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Freeman finished things out for the 3-inning save.

Sowers tallied three of JCU's nine hits. JCU's pitchers mowed down nine, including five Freeman K's.
