In a War of 3-Set Battles, Men's Tennis Emerges with Victory over Grove City

JCU won all three singles matches that went to three sets

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio – After several narrow losses this season, John Carroll Men's Tennis has been working on trying to win the close match.

The Blue Streaks showed great progress on Tuesday afternoon, winning a trio of 3-set battles to secure a 5-2 victory over Grove City College, the 2025 PAC Tournament Runners-Up. The bout took place indoors at the Wembley Club in Chagrin Falls.

The triumph is a nice one, wrapping up the non-conference part of the 2025 slate.

Grove City eked out the team doubles point by winning two close victories. The critical decision proved to be #2 doubles match. Despite a fierce fight, Griffin Millspaugh and Luis Wentz lost a 7-5 contest. Phillip Gorun and Jack Sigler lost a 6-3 matchup at #3. The bright spot was a win at #1 singles. Anthony Markello and Dylan Westmeyer did the job with a 6-2 decision.

Both #1 and #2 singles needed three sets in battles befitting a contest between two strong programs. Anthony Markello battled back from an opening 4-6 defeat to take the second set, 7-6, courtesy of a 10-3 tiebreak. The junior rolled in the deciding set, 6-2.

Westmeyer experienced the opposite path, beating his foe with an early 6-4 conquest, though his #2 singles opponent came back. In the third set, the graduate student outlasted his foe, 6-2.

The #4 singles contest proved to be a long war, too. The combatants took turn dominating sets, but Phillip Gorun got the better of his foe in two of three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Griffin Millspaugh and Luis Wentz experienced easier journeys. Millspaugh rolled in a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #3, while Wentz went 6-2, 6-0 at #5. Sigler was the lone player to lose in singles for JCU, in a 5-7, 1-6 loss at #6.
