Men's Tennis Wraps Up Hilton Head Trip

The Blue Streaks lost a pair of matches to Tiffin and LeTourneau

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Blue Streaks have wrapped up the Hilton Head trip and soon will be heading home.

Late on Thursday night, John Carroll Men's Tennis resumed and finished Monday's match vs. Tiffin University that was postponed due to the lights turning off. The Blue Streaks that one in a 4-3 heartbreaker.

Then on Friday, the Blue Streaks faced off with a bout against LeTourneau University (TX). While the YellowJackets appeared to have a rout on paper, 7-0, it was closer than you might expect with three tiebreakers in singles play. But all went to the Texans in the match.

JCU vs. Tiffin
In an opposite track of the women's contest, JCU Men's Tennis lost all three doubles contests. Anthony Markello and Dylan Westmeyer dueled the closest at #1 doubles, losing a 4-6 match.

The bottom of the lineup brought home bigtime wins for JCU. Griffin Millspaugh delivered a very nice 6-3, 6-4 win at #4 singles. Luis Wentz fought very hard for a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 victory at #5. And Jack Sigler rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Unfortunately, both Markello and Gorun experienced close losses at #1 and #3 singles. At #2, Westmeyer gave it his all. The grad student won the opening set, 7-6, thanks to a 7-2 tiebreaker. His foe forced a tiebreaker set with a 6-4 decision. And in the tiebreaker, Westmeyer lost as close as you can, 10-8.

JCU vs. LeTourneau
Tiebreakers were the name of the game on Friday, and unfortunately, none of them went John Carroll's way.

Doubles play started off JCU on the wrong foot, as the YellowJackets won all three duels, all handily.

Anthony Markello fought a fierce battle atop the singles lineup. The savvy star started in the hole, 1-6, before bouncing back in set two, 6-4. But by the thinnest of margins, he lost the 10-8 tiebreak.

Griffin Millspaugh experienced a similar battle at #4 singles, losing his opener, 4-6, before roaring back, 6-1. His tiebreaker was even more thrilling, but did not go his way, 11-9.

Luis Wentz started on a strong note, 6-3, but his foe responded by winning set two by the same score. Wentz lost the tiebreaker, 10-6.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will return to action in Northeast Ohio on March 15. JCU will travel to Oberlin College for a 2 pm match.
