Softball Picks Up Two More Wins, Beating Rose-Hulman and Rivier

JCU is off to a 4-0 start to the young season

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Four games, four wins for John Carroll Softball.

The Blue Streaks delivered two victories as the Space Coast Spring Games continue in Florida at the Space Coast Complex.

Thanks to exceptional pitching and smart hitting, the Blue Streaks defeated Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 4-0, and Rivier University, 6-1.

Game 1
Kristen Dems pitched an absolute gem in the opener for John Carroll. The sophomore showed out for the first complete game shutout of her collegiate career.

The Mentor native looked outstanding, allowing just one hit and walking none in a fantastic outing. Dems drew five strikeouts and her fielders supported her well, making no errors. Statistically speaking, it was one of the finest outings by a JCU pitcher in recent memory.

Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks quickly got on the board in the second inning. Alyssa McPeek opened the frame by getting aboard via error, soon stole second, and got to third on a Melissa Smith sacrifice bunt. A Norah Bradley double to left scored McPeek for the game's first run. Later in the inning, Katherine Nativio singled to center to plate Bradley.

JCU threatened again in the third, as Smith stroked the second triple of her collegiate career. But the junior was stranded on third.

John Carroll added nice insurance runs in the fifth frame. Kendall Trunzo began the fun with a double to right. After a pair of flyouts, Smith sent her home with a single. Bradley then did more damage, clubbing a double to left to score Smith.

Four runs would be plenty, as JCU advanced to 3-0 on the year with the strong showing. Kaylyn Odelli, Trunzo, Smith, and Bradley all managed 2-hit games. Seven of JCU's nine starters registered hits.

Game 2
A strong start at the dish once again keyed the effort by the Blue Streaks.

Odelli walked to begin the game, an error put Nativio aboard, and Trunzo walked to load the bases with no outs. Izzy Coode drew a hit by pitch for an RBI and Smith shot home a second run with an RBI sacrifice fly.

John Carroll revved up the offense more in the fourth. More Rivier errors aided the effort, though basehits by Angela Vitantonio and Isa Crespo helped get the train in motion.

Casey Cash got the starting nod in the circle and performed well. The junior ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases, but Danielle Orendi checked in and limited the damage. After a walk, Orendi coaxed a strikeout and a foulout to keep JCU in control, 5-1.

An Izzy Coode double in the seventh extended the lead further to five runs. But Orendi didn't need it, as the graduate student pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, capped off by a strikeout. Orendi finished with her second win of the young season.

Both Kendall Trunzo and Coode finished with 2-hit days at the dish.
