Offensive Chemistry on Display as Women's Lacrosse Sinks Saints

John Carroll's offensive machine rolled along in Florida, defeating Emmanuel

CLEARWATER, Fla.  – In wintry conditions or warm weather, all John Carroll Women's Lacrosse does is win.

In the first of two games in Clearwater, Florida during spring break, the Blue Streaks rolled to another dominant win.

In a morning matchup with Emmanuel College (Massachusetts), the Blue Streaks dominated en route to a 17-9 conquest.

The showdown between the Blue Streaks and Saints marked the first in program history. Emmanuel, a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), finished 15-5 last year and made the GNAC Championship. So, the Saints were no slouches.

The teams traded goals in the first 11 minutes of the game, splitting the first six goals evenly. But with 1:54 remaining in the first quarter, a Samantha Usterbowski goal snagged the lead for JCU (off an Olivia Hanulak assist) and the Clevelanders never looked back. Hanulak scored a minute later off an Usterbowski helper to set the score at 5-3 JCU after one.

John Carroll's strong stretch continued in the second quarter. Kathleen Cagney fired home the opening goal of the second stanza off an Usterbowski pass. The Saints soon stemmed the tide with a woman-up goal, narrowing the gap to two near the midpoint. But JCU responded in kind. Kenzie Krom found twine just 56 seconds later. The first year assisted a Cagney goal next, and finished the 3-0 run with an unassisted goal.

Thanks to Krom's excellent stretch, the Blue Streaks carried a 9-4 advantage heading into the break. A focus heading into the second half was playing a clean, disciplined game. Also important in the mind of the coaches was limiting cards.

The Blue Streaks followed the gameplan and continued to roll into the third quarter.

While the Saints scored the first goal of the third, John Carroll again replied with a 3-0 run. Cagney (Abby Cassidy assist), Karson Martin, and Usterbowski (Anna Spitzer assist) all fired home goals. And so, the Blue Streaks stood in full control, 12-5, heading into the fourth.

While the Saints found twine several times in the fourth, John Carroll's victory never seemed in doubt. A Cassidy hat trick, an Usterbowski woman-up goal, and an Ellie Fleischer finisher ensured that the Blue Streaks finished strong, to the tune of a 17-9 conquest.

John Carroll's offensive chemistry was on full display today. Of JCU's 17 goals, 11 were assisted. The passing has been crisp for John Carroll thus far this season, certainly a sign of more great things to come.

Usterbowski led all players with 6 points (4 goals, 2 assists). Cassidy also excelled with 6 points, split evenly between goals and assists. Krom finished with 4 points (with a hat trick of goals), while Cagney tied a career high with 4 goals. Mary Wymard and Meghan Weiner tied for the team lead with 3 groundballs. Emily Van Gorder notched 3 caused turnovers.

In cage, reigning OAC Athlete of the Week Rachel Kroeger did well again. The sophomore notched 12 saves, a new career high.
