Men's Tennis Loses Nailbiter to Roanoke to Start Spring Break

The Blue Streaks came up just short of the team's first win of the year

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Warmer weather welcomed John Carroll Men's Tennis on Sunday.

A five-game spring break trip to Hilton Head in South Carolina began with a matchup against Roanoke.

In the first spring break bout, the Blue Streaks dropped a 5-4 nailbiter, falling to 0-3 on the season.

John Carroll won two of three doubles team points in a strong start. Dylan Westmeyer and Anthony Markello formed a strong duo atop the lineup, squeaking out an 8-5 win. Luis Wentz and Griffin Millspaugh snagged an 8-6 triumph at the #2 spot. Unfortunately, the #3 doubles duo of Phillip Gorun and Jack Sigler dropped their match by the narrowest of margins, losing 8-7 via a 7-5 tiebreaker.

JCU's top of the lineup struggled against a tough Maroons squad. Markello lost his battle in the top spot (5-7, 4-6). Westmeyer forced a tiebreaker set at #2 but ultimately fell, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-10. Gorun accepted a 3-6, 2-6 defeat at the #3 position.

Millspaugh helped JCU bounceback at the #4 singles spot with a bigtime 6-2, 6-2 win. Wentz did a nice job at #5, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. But Sigler surrendered a 6-3, 6-0 loss at #6.
