Blue Streaks Split with Cobbers to Kickstart 2025 Campaign

John Carroll won the nightcap game in the Florida opener

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – On the heels of a lengthy travel day, John Carroll Baseball began the 2025 campaign on Sunday in sunny Florida.

Playing at Chain of Lakes Park, a new facility on the same hallowed grounds where the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox once held spring training, the Blue Streaks opened the season with a pair of games against Concordia College of Moorhead, Minnesota.

The Blue Streaks split with the Cobbers, dropping the opener, 8-7, and winning the nightcap, 6-2, in a pair of 7-inning games.

Game 1
Battling travel fatigue, the Blue Streaks played 20 players in the first game, many of them making their collegiate or JCU debuts. Plenty of bright spots were seen, as just one run separated the two teams.

After allowing an early 2-run blast, Frank Freeman settled into the game. The Chicagoan went on to strike out nine Cobbers in four and a third innings of work in impressive fashion.

While a Connor Mayle RBI single halved the lead in the third, the Cobbers roared in the fifth inning, plating five runs to chase Freeman. An 2-run Erik Daugenti single in the bottom of the frame helped JCU respond. In the sixth, a Dylan Sowers double opened the door to a JCU comeback. Ethan Glossa made the Cobbers pay with a 2-run single to left field, slimming the margin to just one run.

Unfortunately, the Cobbers plated an insurance run in the seventh, which turned out to be critical. Jack Beiter doubled to bring the game within one and Patrick Sherman walked to get the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but the Cobbers got out of the jam to emerge with the 8-7 win.

Glossa and Michael Persichetti both finished with 2-hit games. Glossa also stole a pair of bases.

Game 2
Jake Corll got the starting nod and did an excellent job on the bump for the Blue Streaks. The Austintown Fitch grad held the Cobbers in check, allowing John Carroll's bats to open an early lead.

Sean Fritinger did the key work to break the game open in the second inning. The senior from Aurora blasted in two runs on a well-hit liner, racing around the basepaths and sliding in just in time for a triple. And so, JCU enjoyed a comfy 4-0 lead in the early going.

George Haracz extended the lead further with a double to center in the fourth. The Cobbers forced Corll out of the game in the fifth by scoring a pair of runs, but Roger Simon got out of the jam.

Mayle provided one more run for good measure in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to plate Glossa, adding a bit of extra cushion for Austin Miller, though the veteran didn't need it.

Persichetti finished with another 2-hit game. Glossa also looked great at the plate all day, drawing 2 walks as the leadoff hitter along with a single and a run scored.

Next Up
John Carroll Baseball will be back at it nice and early tomorrow, starting off a doubleheader with Trine at 9:30 am in Auburndale at Lake Myrtle Park.
