Season Starts with Conquest for Women's Lacrosse

The Blue Streaks beat Grove City to start the season on Saturday

AKRON – Winter has not left any openings thus far for spring sports, so John Carroll Women's Lacrosse was forced to move indoors for its first game of the 2025 campaign.

The Blue Streaks made the University of Akron's Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Field House feel like home on Saturday afternoon, firing past Grove City College, 16-9.

A dominant second quarter opened things up for John Carroll, providing good tidings for the start of the season in an all-around nice effort.

Olivia Hanulak struck for the first goal of the season. Riley Knapp also got in on the action early for JCU with a free-position shot. Kenzie Krom notched her first collegiate goal shortly after. And to wrap up the scoring in the first, Kathleen Cagney found the back of the net with 43 seconds left. From then on, John Carroll never trailed.

Abby Cassidy earned her first collegiate goal to begin the second, starting an avalanche that carried John Carroll to victory. Krom fired one home shortly after on a free position. Hanulak upped the lead to four with five to play.

Cassidy critically netted a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the half, upping the JCU advantage to six heading into halftime. JCU stood in full command heading into the break.

While Grove City struck first in the third quarter, Mary Grace Godleski found twine twice in quick succession on sweet passes from Samanatha Usterbowski. But from there, the scoring stagnated for the next 10 minutes.

John Carroll ended the quiet streak with a marvelous breakaway goal. Lauren Schwartz fired home a wonderful pass from Cagney. About 90 seconds later, Cassidy scored a woman-up goal,

Grove City gained momentum in the fourth quarter, roaring for four unanswered goals to get closer. Olivia Hanulak provided a firm answer, however, with back-to-back solo shots after a JCU timeouts to place the game out of reach. Cassidy continued her excellent debut, dashing in past the defense to find twine to end the game at 16-9.

Abby Cassidy made quite the debut, as the Medina native guided the team with 5 goals along with 7 draw controls. Olivia Hanulak's 4 goals also aided the cause greatly. Riley Knapp was everywhere, as the sophomore stood out with 8 draw controls, 5 caused turnovers, and 6 groundballs. Anna Spitzer's 4 groundballs are also worthy of noting.

Rachel Kroeger got the starting nod in net, playing the first 30 minutes. Josephine Lawler played the second half, making 2 saves.

Weather permitting, of course, John Carroll is set to host Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at Don Shula Stadium at 7 pm.
