Blue Streaks Clinch NCAC Championship by Beating Battling Bishops

JCU Football won at home to clinch at least a share of the NCAC crown

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – History was made at Don Shula Stadium, in more ways than one.

John Carroll Football clinched the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship as a first-year member of the league with a dominant 55-17 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University. The conference crown marks JCU's first since 2016 and 13th in program history. Clinching at home is special, as it marked the first time that the Blue Streaks wrapped up a conference title in University Heights since 1974.

For one more piece of history, Tyren Montgomery set the program record for receptions in a season with his 70th in the second quarter, surpassing newly minted JCU Athletic Hall of Famer Frank Ross '10.

Postgame Press Conference (with Montgomery, Behrman, and Semptimphelter)

The Battling Bishops managed to keep it close for much of the first half before John Carroll broke out for 21 points in the final 2:16 of the first half and never looked back.

The first half marked a slowish start with an explosive finish for the offense. A 37-yard Quincy Newsom rush set up JCU at the OWU 30-yard line, but then the hosts' drive stalled. But Colin Schuler came up clutch with a marvelous 46-yard field goal. The Westerville native's kick marked the longest for the Blue Streaks since Grant Gonya knocked home a 47-yarder on October 23, 2021 at Marietta.

Later in the quarter, a sack by Ben Day and Joe Thimons set back OWU at its own 5-yard line. The Battling Bishops' 34-yard punt only helped somewhat. JCU needed just three plays to get the ball to paydirt, with Cohen Klimak dashing in from 14 yards out on a nicely executed run play for the 10-0 lead.

The double-digit lead held through the end of the quarter, but the Battling Bishops drove down the field in the final drive of the stanza and nailed a 42-yard field goal. Midway through the second quarter, JCU got back on the board with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Nick Semptimphelter to Quincy Newsom in the flat.

The Battling Bishops responded with a 91-yard kickoff return touchdown, slimming the margin to 17-10. The narrow 7-point deficit stood until for five minutes, as the Blue Streaks slowly marched down the field. Then, the flood gates opened for the John Carroll offense.

A fantastic screen pass to Shane Lindstrom with Grant Myers leading the way with a fantastic block. The next play, Keller Moten dashed in for a 3-yard touchdown with 2:16 left in the half.

A fumbled punt by OWU recovered by Will Bates set up JCU at the OWU 20-yard line with 1:37 on the clock. Two Quincy Newsom runs later, and the hosts punched it into the end zone, as the junior from Twinsburg showcased exceptional burst through the hole up the middle.

Another Battling Bishops miscue gifted the hosts with more points, as Ivory Travers recovered an OWU fumble at the 16-yard line. Just two plays later, Tyren Montgomery hauled in his 11th touchdown catch of the year.

JCU stood in full command at the break with a 38-10 lead, also outgaining the Battling Bishops, 287-42. OWU was held to negative four yards on the ground in the opening half.

Following an OWU three-and-out, the hosts matriculated the ball down the field with precision. Newsom closed out a -play, -yard drive with a 3-yard score to up the advantage to 45-10.

The Battling Bishops scored the team's first offensive TD late in the game, but JCU responded in kind. Schuler nailed a 22-yard field goal and Moten dashed in for a rushing score, his he seventh of the season, to finish out the scoring.

JCU's ground game was the defining aspect of the day. The men of Travis James racked up 316 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground. Quincy Newsom stood as the lead back with 145 yards on just 12 carries, marking a career high in rushing yards while tallying a pair of scores. Nemo Jenkins also performed well with 88 yards on 11 attempts. As a team, JCU averaged 6.9 yards per carry.

Semptimphelter finished 20-of-26 passing for 205 yards and 2 TDs. Montgomery was his top target with 8 receptions for 97 yards.

On the flipside, Dean Paul's defense did well. The Battling Bishops were limited to negative one rushing yards. OWU was limited to just 14-of-34 passing for 100 yards. Joe Thimons enjoyed a monster day with 5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 1 quarterback hurry, and a pass defensed. Chris Golson also tabbed 5 tackles. JCU notched a total of 6 quarterback hurries.
