7-Match Win Streak for JCU Volleyball Ends in Close Defeat to CWRU

The Spartans survived the battle of Cleveland rivals

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A duel between red-hot Northeast Ohio foes lived up to the hype.

On Dig Pink Night, John Carroll University and Case Western Reserve University gave fans a great evening of volleyball.

In a spirited battle that went all the way to the end, the Spartans ended the Blue Streaks' 7-match winning streak in a 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 18-25, 13-15 match.

Riding a 4-game win stretch, including a 3-1 victory over #10 WashU, the Spartans started strong. The visitors opened a 17-13 early advantage. But JCU stormed back for a 23-20 lead, despite a pair of CWRU timeouts threatening to stem the tide, but the Streaks finished well. A Kallan Hrics kill completed a strong first set for JCU, 25-22.

Once again in the second set, the Spartans came out hot. CWRU kickstarted a 9-5 lead. JCU evened things out at 10-10, leading to a Spartans timeout. From there, the Spartans enjoyed the better of the play down the stretch, staying in command most of the way en route to a 25-19 victory to even it out.

In the third set, JCU roared in a fantastic beginning. A pair of Dejan Whitten kills got things rolling, and a Natalie Glowe pinpoint ace opened an 8-1 advantage. More serve-receive issues for the Spartans led the visitors to burn their second timeout with the hosts in full command, 10-2. Utilizing a balanced front line with dynamic playmakers throughout, the Blue Streaks beat the Spartans' block by attacking from different spots. The visitors tried to make it interesting, but a thunderous Natalie Glowe kill ended it at 25-16.

Backs against the wall, the Spartans burst out to a 9-3 lead to start, leading to a JCU timeout. A diving Olivia Mogyordy free ball turned into a kill that threatened to steal momentum back for the Streaks, so the Spartans called timeout with the advantage slimmed to 14-8. The Blue Streaks enjoyed solid stretches but could not overcome a determined Spartans effort despite Glowe guiding the offense.

The teams traded jabs early in the fifth set, with the Spartans gaining bigtime traction with a 5-point run to fire ahead, 8-5. After the teams traded benches, JCU started to provide an answer. After the hosts trimmed the deficit to 9-7, CWRU called a timeout. The Blue Streaks managed to fight even harder and get it to 12-11, forcing another Spartans timeout. JCU stole another couple points to even it out at 13-all. But the Spartans managed to sneak by, winning the final two points.

Both Natalie Glowe and Hailey Williams enjoyed career days. Glowe tallied a career best 22 kills and 22 digs and Williams notched a career best 19 kills. Tess Humphrey enjoyed a strong day with 33 assists, followed by Haley Nicholson with 25. Olivia Mogyordy led the way with 25 digs.
