Men's Basketball Glides by Yellow Jackets in Berea on Hot Shooting Night

JCU's 63.9% shooting percentage ranks amongst the best performances in program history

BEREA – On a very cold day, during which some John Carroll classes were cancelled – John Carroll Men's Basketball team made the short 30-minute trip to Berea for a matchup with Baldwin Wallace to round out the first half of conference play.

On a night the Blue Streaks shot 63.9% from the field (39-of-61), the Blue Streaks walked out with an impressive 95-76 victory.

A large margin in the paint proved to be the difference. JCU's shooting percentage ranks second in program history, behind only a 64% shooting effort vs. Muskingum on February 7, 2001 (32-of-50).

Will Yontek opened up the scoring with a layup 20 seconds into the game and Henry Raynor quickly added 4 points of his own to establish an early Blue Streak lead, one that they held for the entire game. Despite this, the Yellow Jackets did a great job of matching each JCU score to prevent the game from being blown open early on.

Two threes and a layup from Chase Toppin kept a steady lead. A putback layup as well as a steal and score by Sean Collins got the bench fired up and the Streaks rolling. A few minutes later, a Yontek layup off of an Aidan Fitzgerald offensive rebound and assist improved John Carroll's lead to double digits with three minutes to play in the half. Pairs of free throws by Luke Frazier and Yontek would round out the first half scoring and send the teams into the locker rooms with John Carroll up 41-29.

The Yellow Jackets came out of the half firing, sinking three quick triples to get the deficit back to single digits. However, the Blue Streaks did not flinch and remained aggressive. Layups by Yontek and David Gentry and a fast break dunk from Frazier upped the lead back to 16. BW continued to rain threes, but the third triple of the night by Chase Toppin kept John Carroll in control.

The Yellow Jackets continued to try and inch closer, but the Blue Streaks prevented any runs, while back-to-back triples by Luke Frazier with eight minutes left upped the lead to 20 and sealed the game, as both teams began to empty their benches. Omar Abuhamdeh closed out the scoring with a three on which he had his defender absolutely lost.

The Blue Streaks went to the locker room with their ninth win in a row and a 7-2 conference record.

The story of this winning streak has been their improvements in terms of shooting. Tonight, John Carroll shot 64% from the field as a whole including 50% from three. JCU scored an impressive 60 points in the paint.

Luke Frazier led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Will Yontek added 19 and Henry Raynor came in with 16.
