Gators Bite Blue Streaks in Competitive Home Contest

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The John Carroll Women's Volleyball team dropped its first contest in two weeks in a thrilling back and forth matchup tonight.

Against a solid Allegheny Gators team from the Presidents Athletic Conference, the Blue Streaks dropped a 3-1 defeat at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

This win ends a 3-match John Carroll winning streak and marks the first win for Allegheny over JCU since 2017 and its fifth all-time over the Blue Streaks in the 23-game history.

The visiting Gators scored early and never looked back in the first set, as they snatched the first four points. Two kills from graduate outside hitter Abby Bednar closed the gap to a 5-4 Blue Streak deficit. They would not be trailing for long, as the Gators shot themselves in the foot for five points in a row, giving JCU a 10-7 lead midway through the first set. The Blue Streak lead grew to four points off another kill from Bednar, 16-12. The Gators then began to mount a comeback, scoring eight of the next ten points to give them a close 20-18 advantage down the stretch of the first set. JCU did not back down, as both teams traded points until Allegheny slammed the door, needing an extra point to do it, claiming the first set, 26-24.

JCU got a big response in the second set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead thanks to kills from sophomore Mary Kate Sheehan and senior Jessica Liddle. The Blue Streaks held off Gator runs with some great combinations of defense and offense. Liddle and sophomore Natalie Glowe collected two more kills to bring the JCU lead to 18-13. Toward the end of the set, thanks to two Allegheny service errors and an ace from Liddle, the Blue Streaks were closing in on victory. Sheehan slammed the door with a thunderous kill to clinch the set, 25-19.

The rubber match set looked a lot like the first in the beginning. Both teams traded points until a four point run from the Gators gave them a 9-5 lead. JCU showed its resilience, scoring the next five points off a kill from junior Kendra Dizubinski and two from sophomore Hailey Williams. The offensive firepower did not stop there as Williams, Glowe, Bednar and Dziubinski each added another kill to expand the lead to 16-10. The Gators came back once again, as some Blue Streak mistakes let them back into the match toward the end of the set. After being knotted up at 18, Allegheny scored seven of the next 12 points, winning 25-22, to move ahead two sets to one.

The final set started just like the other three, both teams trading blows, that is until JCU jumped out to a commanding 8-2 lead of back-to-back kills from Glowe. Allegheny roared back to cut the deficit to three off two kills and a Blue Streak service error. The Gators continued to hang around for the majority of the set until they made their run toward the end, where the comeback was completed, cliniching an emphatic road victory over a red-hot Blue Streak team.

Bednar led the way offensively with 18 kills, the most for either team. Glowe and Williams also were forces with 16 and 10 kills respectively. Junior setter Haley Nicholson recorded 28 assists, her second highest mark of the young 2024 season. Freshman Tess Humpfrey also was feeding her teammates all night long, logging 18 assists.
