Offensive Outburst Powers Women's Soccer to Home Conquest

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – It has been a topsy-turvy ride for John Carroll Women's Soccer during non-conference play.

One-goal losses have stung the Blue Streaks early in the campaign, most recently a 2-1 defeat on Senior Day. But as conference play comes into sight, the Blue Streaks are coming alive. From start to finish, John Carroll showcased an aggressive, potent offense that bodes well for the stretch run.

In a season-best showing, the Blue Streaks netted five goals in a dominant 5-1 victory over the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg

"This is such a great feeling," said senior Emily Patrzyk. "We've had two very intense practices this week to rebound from Saturday considering that was most certainly not our best performance. This has taught us the lesson of practice like you play. Practices and games will continue to be intense."

As dark clouds drifted to showcase a golden hour sunset, the Blue Streaks started pressuring Pitt-Greensburg.

It was a slow buildup in the opening minutes, but the Blue Streaks started the attack in full with a shot on goal by Patrzyk, gobbled up by the goalie. A few minutes later in the 17th minute, Madyson Rosado sent a shot wide.

The Blue Streaks broke through in the 20th minute. After some patience in the backline, the Blue Streaks fired ahead a pass to the left side. Emma West one-touched it to Madyson Rosado, and the North Ridgeville worked her magic. She tapped it forward, with the ball bouncing off several Bobcats. Somehow, Rosado found a way to get just enough space to fire it home top right corner.

Not content with a single goal lead, the Blue Streaks did not stop pressuring. In the 31st minute, John Carroll's work paid off.

Patrzyk lofted a corner kick into the box to create the opportunity. Kathryn Shaffer seized the moment, leaping near the farside post to head in a beautiful goal for needed insurance.

"I was just trying to find the 6-yard box," said Patrzyk. "Kathryn was my target, I was trying to get her the header goal, because she's a big replacement for Gabby Walter, who I always looked for last year on corners."

Spurred into action, the Bobcats countered and attempted to find an answer in the waning moments of the half. But the John Carroll backline held well to keep the hosts in front at halftime, 2-0.

The start of the second stanza can be described as nothing but fast and furious. The Bobcats came roaring out of the break and quickly broke through. Sarah Tonkovich scored a rocket of a goal to no fault of the netminder, deserving of a tip of the cap just 97 seconds into the half.

Just under two minutes later, the Blue Streaks provided the response. John Carroll garnered a corner kick, with Meredith Coloian taking it. The Avon native fired it farside to Emma West, and the Avon Lake native took care of business for her second tally of the year.

The teams traded chances as the half elapsed, with plenty of interesting opportunities for both sides. The frenetic pace of the earlier stages of the half did not continue, but the play certainly didn't slow to a standstill, with the teams taking turns with promising chances.

The Blue Streaks' offense refused to relent down the stretch.

In the 78th minute, the Blue Streaks worked the ball into Rosado, but the senior smartly sent it back out to Emma West. With space, the junior lofted a marvelous shot over the head of the keeper for her second of the evening.

But that was definitely not all. In the 82nd minute, Sara Gennuso worked with the ball along the right side before slotting it towards the middle to a waiting Patrzyk. The Twinsburg native calmly took a pair of touches to collect it on her right foot, and fired a strong, lofting shot over the outstretched hands of the keeper.

"I saw Sara was wide, so I dropped back a bit," said Patrzyk. "My defender kept running towards the goal, so I had an open goal. I took a touch to my right foot, which is my dominant foot, and just took a shot and saw it hit the back of the net."

JCU's five goals is the team's highest output in a game since scoring seven on October 29, 2022 in a 7-1 win over Muskingum. It's the most on home turf since a 6-1 victory over Thiel on September 14, 2022.

Individually, for Emma West, it marked the first multi-goal game of her college career. Bryanna LeRoy and Molly Snider both made their collegiate debuts late in the contest.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will hit the road for the final non-conference match. John Carroll will head to the College of Wooster for a 4 pm contest on Saturday.
