Blue Streaks Open Up McCarthy Weekend Defeating Stockton, Highlighted By Dylan Halm’s Two Goal Effort

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - It was gorgeous for a Friday night lights matchup as the Blue Streaks took on the Ospreys of Stockton University to open the 2024 McCarthy Weekend at Don Shula Stadium for the 60th Anniversary of JCU Men's Soccer.

This weekend kicks off the Cleveland Classic, a new midseason tournament that hosts traveling teams taking place in the Cleveland area.

With alumni returning to campus this weekend to fulfill their lifelong memories of being a Blue Streak, the Wenzler's Warriors made them proud this evening by blanking the Ospreys by a final score of 3-0.

The Blue Streaks were coming off a 3-0 victory against the College of Wooster this past Saturday, September 7th, headlined by Hayden Haffner's hat trick on the road.

John Carroll came out firing by pressuring the Ospreys, recording seven total shots in their zone in the first half, as well as a couple of corner kicks to find that momentum in the early stages of the match.

Not long after, in the 29th minute, Senior Nicolas Graeca ripped a shot to the back of the net to put JCU up 1-0, assisted by Guilherme Wanderley to put the Blue Streaks ahead.

Stockton put in a pair of substitutions to find their groove after getting scored on to try and make something come alive in their offense.

As time went on, JCU continued to fight and apply their pressure to the Stockton defense by bringing in a few substitutions as well including Louis Roseberry, Patrick Koenig, and Andrew Ruggiero

As the offense continued to progress, first year Dylan Halm would find his way into the middle of the zone and notch a goal for the Blue Streaks, carrying the momentum heading into the half. Halm's goal would not have happened if it was not for Cade Gergye, who found Halm on the long throw- in for the Blue Streaks.

It was a special moment for the team heading into the half as the 1979 JCU soccer team was recognized amidst the successful start from the team. One member of that team was Andrew McCarthy, who passed away suddenly. As McCarthy weekend was named in his honor, the players on the field reminisced about him and their team as they paved the way for future Blue Streaks.

Coming into the second half, JCU recorded a total of seven shots, while the Stockton Ospreys couldn't get anything going with their offense.

The Blue Streaks continued to fight and found a rhythm coming into the second half of play.

A close shot by Hayden Haffner, just wide left, would have benefited the Blue Streaks to build that confidence even more as the match went on.

The Blue Streaks defensive line continued to keep goalkeeper Dominic Grobler clean. As the back line of Gergye and Daniel Kalic held down the fort, they only allowed one shot in the second half. Other players holding down in the defensive end were Logan Brown, Steven Samuelson, and captain Izac Coleman.

First year Dylan Halm would record another goal for the Blue Streaks as it was a perfect header set up by senior Jack Foht, executing Stockon's zone to put the team up three goals to none.

The excitement in the air from the Wenzler's Warriors would continue to increase as JCU was minutes away from picking up their first win in their debut of the Cleveland Classic.

John Carroll's defense continued to stay hot as Cade Gergye and Daniel Kalic made the Ospreys' time difficult to find a shot.

"The defense is amazing," mentioned Halm. "It saves me energy from having to run back because I trust my guys back there to do the dirty work, so I can get back with the offense. Having them back there allows me to perform at my highest."

Looking ahead to the second match of the Cleveland Classic against the Trine Thunder, Halm is looking forward to the Blue Streak offense finding their rhythm early.

"We just have to keep our foot on the gas," exclaimed Halm. "Don't let loose and do the little things. We gotta recover and put our mind where it needs to be to focus on our next game."

The Wenzler's Warriors will look to continue their winning ways and extend their streak to four games as they take on Trine University in a noon matchup back at Don Shula Stadium on Sunday, September 15th to conclude the Cleveland Classic.
