In Front of Great Home Opener Crowd, JCU Volleyball Rolls Past Chatham

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — In the first action of the school year at Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, the John Carroll Volleyball team took care of the visiting Chatham Cougars in straight sets, 25-13, 25-10, 25-18.

This pushed the Blue Streaks to 7-1, the program's best start through eight games since 2014, a team that finished runner-up in the OAC Tournament. In JCU's seven wins, five have come by the sweep, and tonight was no different.

JCU got off to a fast start in the first set after the Cougars arrived late, running into traffic on the way from Pittsburgh, so the contest started at 7:30 pm instead of the scheduled 7 pm. The Blue Streaks erupted to five straight points to take a commanding 7-2 lead. The Cougars kept beating themselves as multiple attack and service errors led to John Carroll taking a massive 19-8 advantage. Back-to-back kills from junior middle hitter Kendra Dziubinski clinched the first set for the Blue Streaks in dominant fashion, 25-13.

The Blue Streaks had their backs up against the wall at the start of the second half. After a 5-4 lead after nine serves, JCU would score 10 of the next 14 points to take control of the set. The John Carroll offense took over the match with two kills from sophomore Natalie Glowe and graduate student Abby Bednar to put the home squad up 18-8. The offensive and defensive onslaught did not end, as JCU scored five straight points to clinch the second set, 25-10.

The third set would be the same story. A kill from Dziubinski and sophomore Mary Kate Sheehan propelled John Carroll ahead 4-0 to start the third. Chatham responded and kept pace with the Blue Streaks, remaining within 4 points until a kill from sophomore middle hitter Kallan Hrics caused a Chatham timeout, as JCU went ahead, 12-7. The Cougars continued to remain close with John Carroll until down the stretch of the set when three attack errors from Chatham put the Blue Streaks on the doorstep of a sweep. A couple of aces from Chatham delayed the celebration, until Sheehan slammed the door on an emphatic win.

Senior outside hitter Marissa Lynch led the way offensively with eights kills, while Bednar and Glowe tallied seven kills with a .500 hitting percentage. Glowe also racked up a team lead of nine digs to go along with her prolific offensive performance. Setters Tess Humphrey and Haley Nicholson were setting up their teammates all night tallying 22 and 17 assists, respectively.

"That's the best we've played as a team so far this season," Dziubinski commented on the team's performance. "We feel prepared and I hope we can continue to carry the chemistry we have right now into Rochester and into the rest of the season."
