Blue Streaks Fall Short In I-90 Thriller Against Penn State Behrend

ERIE, Pa.-- Despite the strong efforts by the Blue Streaks, the Nittany Lions defeated a top ten opponent in Pennsylvania.

As the Blue Streaks traveled over the state line to face the Penn State Behrend Nittany Lions, both teams were eager to get the show on the road. With the rain clearing and both teams ready to play under the lights, the game was underway.

The game started out very neutral. Both teams stayed near the half-way line trying to make something in the offensive zone. After both teams had a corner kick, the first opportunity came in the 8th minute.

After receiving a free kick, the Nittany Lions sent in a ball into the box. Trying to find forward Trinity Prestash, senior defender Brooke Kelly was able to clear the ball out on a strong defensive effort.

Minutes later, the Blue Streaks were able to get a pair of opportunities of their own. The Blue Streaks were able to find Madyson Rosado in a through ball, but was stopped short by the defensive line. Seconds later, Emily Patrzyk sent a cross to Rosado, but was stopped short to side the referee's flag.

From here, the Blue Streaks were able to keep the momentum, as Patrzyk had an open shot on the net about 20 yards out in the 14th minute, but her shot went just above the net.

Ten minutes later in the 23rd minutes, the Nittany Lions were able  to find the back of the net courtesy of a corner kick. The Nittany Lions took the corner. Trying to find a couple Nittany Lions, it rolled out to Nicole Croushore. Putting a beautiful strike on net, Croushore scored his second goal of her senior year to make the score 1-0.

Trying to tie the game, the Blue Streaks kept their offensive efforts alive. Alli Malinky received a pass from Emma West, but her strike off the left foot found the hands of goalkeeper Riley Morningstar.

The Blue Streaks kept their offensive alive. Getting the ball on a half-volley, West put another shot at net, but Morningstar continued her strong defensive efforts to keep the lead.

Despite the Blue Streaks keeping the ball in the offensive zone for most of the first half, Penn State Behrend led John Carroll by a score of 1-0. The Blue Streaks offensive efforts only put three shots, with two going on net. On the other hand, the Nittany Lions only had one shot, which they scored. As coach Michael Marich went to the drawing board, they hoped to change the tide in the next 45 minutes.

With the second half underway, it started identical to the first half. Both teams trying to find an opportunity, the ball stayed near the halfway line.

Ten minutes later, Penn State Behrend got the first chance of the half, Nicole Croushore took the free kick, but shot it over the net. The Nittany Lions got another opportunity seconds later thanks to Lauren Kiser, but Madeline Martin was there to make the diving save.

John Carroll got their first opportunity in the second half thanks to a free kick. Kathryn Shaffer took the free kick and sent it towards the net. As Patrzyk got the first touch, the Nittany Lions found the second touch and cleared it out of the zone.

But as time went on, the ball was a magnet toward midfield.

With 14 minutes remaining, freshman Lucy Kuerbis was able to get a good interception in the offensive zone. Passing the ball to Sara Gennuso, she put a strike on net that was just wide.

Five minutes later, Rachel Sickeri was able to put a shot on net, but Martin was there to grasp the save. Sickeri put another shot on net a minute later, but Martin was able to stop the shot once again.

The Nittany Lions continued their offensive push. As Trinity Prestash caught Martin off her feet, she took a shot on net. But Martin was able to dive the other way to make the big save with five minutes left.

With the clock ticking down, the Blue Streaks knew they had to put something on net, and the best opportunity came from Patrzyk. Standing at the penalty spot, she received a hot pass. On her left foot, she put a shot on net, but Morningstar continued her strong efforts in net, recording the save.

But as time came closer to zero, it was just too late for the Blue Streaks, as Penn State Behrend defeated the Blue Streaks 1-0.

John Carroll will stay on the road in The Keystone State to face Farmingdale State in Dallas, PA on Saturday, September 7 at 3pm.
