Season Closes Out with 2 Heartbreakers for Softball

BEREA – A lengthy journey of a 2024 season is complete for John Carroll Softball.

Against the now-Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament bound Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets, the Blue Streaks played two very close games against the crosstown rivals.

A late comeback came up short in the opener, 6-4, before a 10-inning classic also went against the visitors. Baldwin Wallace ended JCU's season with a walkoff in a 5-4 thriller.

Game 1
The day before the series, the start of Game 1 was moved up to noon to avoid the rain. The earlier start didn't impact the Baldwin Wallace bats.

The hosts plated three in the bottom of the first inning, with four hits turning into three runs for an early lead for the Yellow Jackets.

After Danielle Orendi mowed down six straight Yellow Jackets, Baldwin Wallace's bats came alive for three more runs in the fifth. Two of the runs were unearned, as an early JCU error prolonged the frame.

But JCU refused to be discouraged. The Blue Streaks fired up a comeback in the sixth, starting with a 2-out Kaylyn Odelli double. A Melissa Smith single then scored JCU's first run of the day. Taylor Morrison followed with a single, setting the stage for Gabby Hougan. The JCU Sports Information star clubbed a single up the middle to score Smith and tally her team-best 14th RBI of the year. One more RBI single by Lexie Genovese sliced the lead to three, but BW escaped there.

After Casey Cash kept Baldwin Wallace off the board in the sixth, JCU made it interesting in its final chance at the dish.

Back-to-back singles by Kendall Trunzo and Laney Karpowicz set the stage for JCU. Odelli got Karpowicz home on a foulout, but BW got the final out to end the game.

Morrison finished with her second straight multi-hit game, and Hougan tallied two hits as well. Trunzo's 3-hit day marked her second in as many games.

Game 2
The teams traded runs in the first frame. Trunzo began the contest with a single up the middle. Walks by Odelli and Smith loaded the bases for Hougan, who tallied a clutch sacrifice fly for an RBI and the game's first run. But the Yellow Jackets garnered the third out.

And in the bottom of the inning, BW tied it up. The Yellow Jackets also scratched across a run in both the second and third to take a 3-1 lead, but that didn't last very long.

In the fifth, John Carroll got things back to square. Karpowicz singled to start things, and Elaina Rodriguez doubled to set two runners in scoring position. A couple of batters later, Hougan made the Yellow Jackets pay, clipping a 2-run single to center field to knot it up at three.

Kristin Dems allowed a run in the fifth, which was unearned, and exited the day after five solid innings. Orendi checked in for the sixth and mowed down the Jackets 1-2-3.

Back-to-back walks of Odelli and Smith started off the seventh on a nice note. Hougan again came up in the clutch, tallying another bigtime RBI to tie the ballgame. The visitors did load the bases, but the Yellow Jackets got out of the jam.

The hosts threatened a walkoff, getting two aboard. But Orendi didn't blink, leaving the winning run stranded at third. JCU also looked dangerous to start extras, loading the bases with two outs. The hosts survived the scare to remain knotted up at four.

Both teams went in order in the ninth and a doubleplay by BW ended JCU's hopes of scoring in the 10th. The Yellow Jackets got a runner aboard with 1 out thanks to a hit by pitch and quickly advanced the winning run to third on a single. A sacrifice fly ended the contest in BW's favor, and thus JCU's campaign.

Hougan finished with a great game at the dish, with a 2-for-4 effort, driving in all four of JCU's runs. The Springboro native finishes the year with a team-high 18 RBIs, ending the season on a 5-game hitting streak. Orendi accepted the tough-luck loss despite four and two-thirds innings of very strong relief work.

The Blue Streaks finishes the season with a 6-29 record.
