Bats Battle Back for Split vs. #4 BW in Schweickert Field Finale

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- On a cloudy, occasionally rainy Friday afternoon, the Blue Streaks hosted the No. 4 Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets for a doubleheader at Schweickert Field and the last Ohio Athletic Conference regular season matchup of the year for both teams.

Baldwin Wallace stormed past John Carroll in the opener, 11-4. Some teams may have quit after a difficult opener loss to one of the best teams in the country.

Not Bobby Bell's squad.

The Blue Streaks thundered past the Yellow Jackets in Game 2, 10-2, in the final game on the grass and dirt of Schweickert Field before the Bracken & Schweickert Fields are turfed over the summer.

Eight Blue Streaks tabbed a hit in the second contest, while Jamon Higley and Maxwell Schumaker did fantastic work on the bump.

Game 1
Frank Freeman would struggle on the mound, making it through just 3 1/3 innings while allowing 7 earned runs.

For the visiting Yellow Jackets, Vince Dolcemaschio had an excellent day on the mound, going 8 innings while allowing 4 runs, 2 being unearned. This effort was enough to earn Dolcemaschio his 7th win of the season in a 11-4 victory for Baldwin-Wallace.

The Yellow Jackets got out to a fast start. After a hit by pitch and two singles from the first three batters of the game loaded the bases, a double to left center cleared the bases to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead with no outs. Baldwin-Wallace later scored on a groundout to take a 4-0 lead after the first.

The Yellow Jackets added to the run total with an RBI double in the top of the second. A triple and single made the score 6-0 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. A failed hit-and-run attempt that turned into a double play would get the Streaks out of the inning.

A home run to open the fourth inning once again extended the lead for the Yellow Jackets. After a single, walk, and hit by pitch, Sylvan Wiley came into the game to pitch and was able to cause a double play to get the Streaks out of the jam.

A dropped third strike, a wild pitch, and a single by Jordan Suvak would earn the Blue Streaks their first run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth. After a single by Erik Daugenti and an error in the outfield, the Blue Streaks would get on the board again to make the score 7-2.

Baldwin-Wallace responded with a 2-run inning of their own in the top of the 6th to put themselves back up by seven, stretching the lead further in the seventh.

After a string of singles and walks, a single by Jack Harmon brought in two more runs for the Blue Streaks to set the score at 10-4 Yellow Jackets going into the ninth. Asingle, balk, and another single the Yellow Jackets added onto their lead once again, and the contest ended with an 11-4 BW win.

Game 2
The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the first inning, but this time, a smart defensive play by JCU got it over with more quickly, thanks to a smart 8-5-4 putout.

A pair of singles by Luke Chlystek and Erik Daugenti started JCU's response. Persichetti's perfect sacrifice bunt and Connor Mayle's double plated both for the lead. But the runs kept coming. A Jack Harmon RBI single and a Baldwin Wallace throwing error got two more across to finish off a 4-run first frame for JCU.

A BW bunt single to start the second made it appear as if a response was brewing. But an excellent play at the hot corner by Mayle led to a 5-4-3 twinkiller. John Carroll stretched the lead out and forced the visitors to dig into their bullpen in the third inning. A Persichetti single was followed by a Mayle double down the left field line. A Thomas Bates RBI fielder's choice added one, and then a Logan LaMere sacrifice fly pushed the advantage to 6-1.

With Jamon Higley cooking on the mound, JCU's bats kept fighting, though the hosts left the bases loaded in the sixth. The vaunted Yellow Jackets at last got to Higley in the seventh, as BW put two runners into scoring position with one out. Maxwell Schumaker checked in and garnered two groundouts, allowing a run to score but still allowing plenty of breathing room at 6-2.

JCU got the runs back in the bottom of the frame and then some. Thomas Bates tabbed a leadoff double down the right field line on a ball nearly caught by the right fielder, and got to third on a Harmon single. LaMere plated both promptly on a single tapped into center. Things kept on rolling later on in the frame, with a Chlystek RBI single and an RBI sac fly by Daugenti.

A 10-2 lead proved plenty for Schumaker, as the graduate student allowed just one baserunner on a walk in 2 2/3 of flawless relief. Higley got the win, his fourth of the campaign, as it marked the second straight 6-plus inning, 2-run outing for the Union City, Pennsylvania native.

Each member of the batting order reached base, and the first eight Blue Streaks tallied a hit.
