Sweep Stabilizes JCU Baseball, as Blue Streaks Beat Capital in 2 OAC Wins

COLUMBUS – After a tough stretch to open Ohio Athletic Conference play, John Carroll Baseball very much needed a bounceback.

The Blue Streaks got it.

John Carroll authored two authoritative victories over the Capital Comets on Saturday, 13-4 and 6-3.

The sweep is critical for John Carroll heading into a very busy week with five games next week, including four OAC contests. It marks the third straight year JCU has swept the Comets.

Game 1
From the jump, John Carroll set the tone. Michael Persichetti opened with a walk and JCU was off and running. A 2-run Erik Daugenti double and a 2-run Jack Harmon single opened things up, with a Sean Fritinger double finishing the 5-run opening frame.

Capital did plate a pair in response, but JCU's bats provided consistent content for the box score. Bryce Holt tabbed RBI singles in the second and fourth, with a Logan LaMere RBI double sandwiched in there.

Capital tried to make things interesting, but a 4-run sixth inning ended those thoughts.

RBI singles to right field by Jack Harmon and Luke Chlystek, along with sacrifice flies by Fritinger and LaMere, gave Frank Freeman all the run support he needed.

The Chicago native gave JCU seven innings, striking out six along the way. John Gavric provided two innings of flawless relief, mowing down four Comets en route.

George Haracz, Connor Mayle, and Holt all finished with 3-hit days. John Carroll's 15 hits stand as a season high, as are the 13 RBIs.

Game 2
Austin Miller. That's the story.

The Aurora, Illinois native enjoyed a fantastic day. The junior pitched a career-high seven and one-third innings in a heck of an effort. In today's baseball world, all the experts talk about is strikeouts. So, sure, Miller's 3 strikeouts don't pop on a box score. But man, 11 groundouts are sure great.

Capital did not get on the board until the eighth inning. With the Comets threatening with the bases loaded and one out, the junior star reliever Owen Gerba entered the game.

The Comets did get an RBI double, and a groundout for a run, but Gerba got out of the jam. JCU still enjoyed a 3-run cushion, thanks to the bats.

A Chlystek walk and a LaMere RBI groundout got two runs in the second, with one more run getting across in the third. An Erik Daugenti RBI single in the seventh and a LaMere RBI single in the eight helped vastly.

Gerba closed things with ease in the ninth, as the winning run never got to the plate. The Saint Ignatius grad registered his third career save. Miller locked in his first career win.
