Softball Comes Up Short Twice at Wilmington

WILMINGTON – A trip to Southwest Ohio led to a pair of close losses for John Carroll Softball.

The Blue Streaks played hard and nearly got a win or two, but dropped both Ohio Athletic Conference games at Wilmington College on Saturday, 7-5 and 3-0.

Game 1
Kendall Trunzo kicked off the game on a great note, clubbing a double to left center. A couple hitters later, Kaylyn Odelli ripped a double over the center fielder's head. Her big-time double plated Trunzo for the first run of the game.

The fun didn't stop there, as Gabby Hougan (hailing from nearby Springboro) walked to start the second frame. Lexie Genovese then singled to put two aboard. Following a Laney Karpowicz sacrifice bunt, a Wilmington wild pitch plated Hougan for a 2-0 lead.

The Quakers loaded the bases with no outs in the third, spelling trouble for the visitors. A barrage of hits hurt the Blue Streaks, as Wilmington found a groove. By the time the dust settled, the Quakers possessed a 5-2 advantage.

Wilmington added another in the fourth. JCU and Wilmington then traded jabs in the sixth, with the Blue Streaks' damage done by Laney Karpowicz on an RBI single.

The Blue Streaks made a big comeback attempt in the seventh despite being down four runs. Gaby Hougan hit a shallow pop fly that landed just inside fair territory in left field to plate Odelli. Then Genovese hit a Texas Leaguer to right center for a second run. But with the go-ahead runner at the plate, Wilmington made a pitching change. The Quakers' reliever slammed the door with a pair of outs to escape with the narrow victory.

On the plus side, Melissa Smith caught a runner stealing to give her 11 on the year, one away from tying Jamie Smrdel Kamensky's single season record. Additionally, Genovese is now the career hit by pitch leader with 20.

Game 2
The first few innings were quiet in Wilmington, as Kristin Dems cruised in the early going for JCU.

The Blue Streaks got the team's first hit in the fourth, but Wilmington one-upped JCU and got on the scoreboard. The hosts got two aboard via a hit by pitch and single, and then advanced the runners to second and third on a sac bunt. The Quakers got both home on a double, and then a third run on a triple.

Casey Cash saved room for a comeback with two and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief.

JCU got baserunners in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings at the dish to threaten. An Elaina Rodriguez double in the sixth and a Genovese double in the seventh looked promising. But the visitors stranded a runner in each game.

Up Next
The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Monday, heading to Allegheny College for a non-conference doubleheader.
