Blue Streaks Split with Quakers on Alumni Day Celebrating 1984 Baseball Team

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Following a tough start with a Game 1 defeat, John Carroll Baseball figured it out with a dominant Game 2 victory.

The Blue Streaks lost the opener in disappointing fashion, 14-6, before roaring back for a dominant 12-3 victory.

Before the split with the Wilmington Quakers, the Blue Streaks celebrated the 40th anniversary of the 1984 John Carroll Baseball squad. The talented team stands amongst the best in program history, as undefeated Presidents Athletic Conference Champions. That team also made history by making the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Prior to the game, JCU Athletic Hall of Famer John Magyari '84 threw out the first pitch to Vince Ripepi with the good doctor Jerry Schweickert '60 looking on.

Game 1
Wilmington opened the game on a fortuitous note, hitting a leadoff homer. But the Blue Streaks responded in kind in the second inning.

Connor Mayle got aboard via a shallow single to left center to start things off. Luke Chlystek blasted a 2-run dinger over the fence in right field to snag the lead for John Carroll. The homer marked the first of his career for the Lake Bluff, Illinois native.

But the game seesawed back in favor of Wilmington in the fourth. On a 3-1 pitch, Carter Scheben blasted a rocket over the fence in center to retake a 3-2 lead. JCU authored a response in the fifth frame, as Michael Persichetti tied the game on a single to center to plate Logan LaMere after the senior got aboard on a single. An inning later, JCU stole the lead with an RBI single by Jack Harmon, but then the wheels fell off the bus.

In a nightmare inning for JCU, the Quakers scored 11 runs on 7 hits in the seventh, fully taking control of the ballgame by doing damage against several pitchers.

John Carroll did plate a pair in the bottom of the frame, but it was not going to be enough.

Game 2
The high-octane offense continued in the second contest.

Wilmington opened again by scoring in the first, putting two runs on the board. But the Blue Streaks authored an instant response. A Connor Mayle double and a Quaker error helped to even the score.

The teams traded runs again in the second. Chlystek doubled and Erik Daugenti singled to put a run on the board for the good guys. John Carroll took the lead for good in the third inning. Mayle kicked off the frame with a single, later coming around on a Ryan Funderburg RBI single.

Key insurance runs followed in the fourth. Chlystek got aboard with a leadoff single, stole second, and dashed home on a Persichetti single. Mayle then doubled, setting up two ducks on the pond for Jack Harmon. The Marist alum didn't disappoint, crushing a deep double to left center to up the lead to 7-3.

John Carroll made it a laugher in the seventh. Back-to-back straight singles by Jordan Suvak and LaMere plated one run. Funderberg got a bunt single to place two aboard. Following a Carson Balfour bunt single, a Chlystek bloop single manufactured two runs, and then the Lake Forest, Illinois native quickly scored on a Daugenti triple that was crushed to right center. The Saint Ignatius grad crossed on a Persichetti sac fly to up the lead to 12-3.

In the eighth, Jack Harmon doubled, reached third on an error, and then crossed on a Jordan Suvak double to end the game in mercy rule fashion.

Both Chlystek and Mayle finished with 3-hit games. Jamon Higley got the win on the bump. After allowing a few runs early, the Union City, Pennsylvania native kicked it into gear, giving JCU six strong innings. Maxwell Schumaker finished things out with two and one-third clean innings.

Next Up
