Women's Tennis Loses Hard-Fought Home Battle to Otterbein

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Entering the day, John Carroll Women's Tennis harbored hopes of playing spoiler and claiming a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title.

Alas, the Otterbein Cardinals, now three-time reigning OAC regular season champs, held off the Blue Streaks in a 6-3 decision.

With the defeat, JCU drops to 3-2 in conference play with one left to go.

The start spelled trouble for John Carroll in doubles. Madeline Kavenagh and Evelyn Deren opened with an 8-2 defeat at No. 1 doubles. Felicity Kolb and Sarah Sgambati dropped next with an 8-4 loss at No. 2. Otterbein concluded the sweep despite a hard-fought effort by Kayley Gimbel and Caroline Chandler at No. 3, 8-7, thanks to a 7-3 tiebreaker.

The Cardinals did not take long to secure the team win and thus the OAC regular season crown, picking up victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

But John Carroll did not surrender, actually picking up steam after this.

Sarah Sgambati got the hosts on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in third singles, with plenty of spirited points along the way. Felicity Kolb followed suit, with a 6-1 easy opening set before needing a 7-1 tiebreak to take the set 7-6 and thus the match.

Caroline Chandler won a grueling match at No. 6. The Iowa native grinded out a 7-5, 6-2 victory in a bout that required plenty of patience and endurance.

But the Cardinals did conclude the day with a victory. Kayley Gimbel worked hard, but lost a 6-4, 6-4 duel at No. 5 to finish the day.
