Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down Cardinals to Keep Rolling in OAC Play

WESTERVILLE – The phrase of the game today for John Carroll Men's Lacrosse was stingy defense.

The Blue Streaks surrendered just two goals on the road in an excellent showing in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Joe Rautenstrauch's men travel home from Otterbein University with a dominant 11-2 conquest.

Scoring was at a premium in the first half. Morgan Morrell got thing started at the 10-minute mark off a Brody Forrest assist, though Otterbein got its first just a couple minutes later. At the 4-minute mark, John Carroll got back on top, and never relented the lead.

Sean Keane scored on the man-up, off a dish from Braden Zarek. JCU's narrow 2-1 lead stood through the first quarter. In the second, John Carroll provided two insurance markers. Zarek set up Josh Lombardo on the first one and Morrell did the job unassisted on the second.

With the JCU defense playing excellently, the visitors possessed a 4-1 advantage heading into the break.

While Otterbein struck first midway through the third, the Blue Streaks dominated from that point forward. Zarek continued to thrive offensively, scoring a goal with 4:55 left and then assisting a Morrell marker less than a minute later. Larry Voss found twine with just over a minute remaining, and then Morrell sent home a shot off a pass from Alexander Sykas with 32 seconds left. John Carroll's 9-2 lead felt very safe entering the fourth.

Zarek powered the offense ahead further, setting up a Billy Paladino goal near the midway mark. Not content, Zarek scored one of his own with two minutes left on the man-down.

Morgan Morrell's 4 goals topped the team, and Braden Zarek's 6-point effort was massive on the offensive end.

Talking about defense, Brody Forrest came up with a team-high 3 caused turnovers in addition to his assist. Alexander Sykas turned in 6 groundballs on top of his 2 caused turnovers. Levi Kinnan continued his outstanding work on faceoffs, winning 12-of-16. And of course, Jon Gaglio played brilliantly with 9 saves.

Looking at the team stats, JCU outshot Otterbein, 50-30, and absolutely dominated the GBs, 28-9.

The Blue & Gold are back in action on Saturday for a special one. John Carroll Men's Lacrosse will celebrate its 10-Year Anniversary with festivities and a critical showdown with Capital University. Faceoff is set for 1 pm at Don Shula Stadium.
