Men's Lacrosse Gets Off the Schneid, Beating Muskingum on the Road

NEW CONCORD – Following four straight losses, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse needed a palate cleanser on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks got back on track, earning a 14-8 road win over Muskingum University.

With the victory, JCU evens out at 1-1 in conference play.

The Blue Streaks roared off the bus, scoring five straight goals to open the game. Sean Keane kicked off the scoring, off a Colin Morrissey pass. Morgan Morrell followed suit, returning from a brief absence, with a tally off a Brody Forrest assist. After a Morrissey goal, Morrell got back on the board again off a Keane assist. Morrissey completed the run at the 5-minute mark.

Muskingum narrowed the deficit with a pair of goals in quick succession, but Morrissey got JCU back in the stat sheet with a response shortly after, with Josh Lombardo providing the assist. JCU held a 6-2 advantage after two.

The visitors kept the run going into the second quarter. JCU started the second stanza on the man-up, and made the hosts pay about 15 seconds into the penalty. Morrissey fired home a shot off a Braden Zarek helper. A few minutes later, Morrissey set up Keane on the man-down. The run concluded at four goals, with Alexander Sykas hitting a crossfield pass to Morrissey, who ripped it home.

Muskingum ended the damage there, and narrowed the lead with two goals in the span of a minute. The final nine minutes of the half elapsed without any scores, so JCU stood ahead by a 9-4 margin at halftime.

The third quarter largely belonged to the Fighting Muskies. After a Morrissey goal from Lombardo opened the action, Muskingum notched back-to-back-to-back tallies to change the nature of the game. JCU's lengthy scoreless streak ended at last with 93 seconds left in the quarter, but an 11-7 lead felt somewhat tenuous entering the fourth.

Morrissey helped to make the lead feel safer at the 9-minute mark off a Zarek pass. Following a Muskingum goal, Morrissey kept the Blue Streaks comfortable with a lefty goal off another Zarek pass. Zarek then did nice work himself, walking up and bouncing one in for a 14-8 lead, which stood as the final.

Colin Morrissey enjoyed a heck of a day, setting a new career best for goals with eight. Additionally, the Skaneateles, New York native set a program record with 23 shots, outdoing Skyler Blake, who ripped 21 shots vs. Marietta on April 17, 2021.

Josh Lombardo did an excellent job distributing with a career-best 4 assists, his first time with multiple helpers in a game. Braden Zarek finished with 4 assists for the second straight game. Alexander Sykas tied a season best with 6 groundballs, adding 3 caused turnovers. Jon Gaglio finished with 6 saves.

The Blue Streaks will now prepare for a critical conference showdown on Wednesday. John Carroll will welcome Baldwin Wallace in a rivalry showdown and a rematch of the last several OAC Tournament Championships.
