Men's Lacrosse Kicks Off Campaign with Home Win over Wooster

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – For the seventh time in eight seasons, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse has opened the season with a victory.

The Blue Streaks revved up the scoring and played solid defense in a home victory to start 2024. JCU rolled past the College of Wooster Fighting at Don Shula Stadium, 13-8.

Not a bad start to the season for the men of Joe Rautenstrauch.

"Great start to the season," said the eighth-year head coach. "You never know what you're going to get in first game out. It got a little sloppy in the second quarter, but we bounced back very well in the second half. I'm very proud of the effort, we had a lot of guys playing big minutes for the first time in their career. Excited to grow as a group as the season goes on."

Wooster started the scoring, but the hosts responded in kind. Vinny Fiorella tallied the first goal of the campaign on a sidewinder shot, with a quick dish by Billy Paldino setting it up. Josh Lombardo hit a straightaway shot for the lead, and Colin Morrissey added to it shortly after. Morgan Morrell added a buzzerbeater goal off a William Dunn helper, setting the margin at 4-1 after one.

The Fighting Scots authored a response in the second quarter. Wooster tallied the first two goals of the period, both on pretty shots. At the 3-minute mark, William Dunn made a move inside and fired a shot high to get JCU back on the board. The Buffalo native's tally set JCU ahead at halftime, 5-4.

Max Cook did excellent solo work on the first goal of the second half just two minutes in, firing a low shot. JCU kept up the pressure, with Morrell scoring off an assist from Morrissey in transition. John Carroll then doubled the lead, with Fiorella firing one home off a Braden Zarek. Meanwhile, Jon Gaglio played incredibly between the pipes, turning away some promising chances.

A turnover on a clear led to a Wooster goal at the 6-minute mark, as the Fighting Scots fought to stay in the game. But Morrissey provided a nice answer, with Dunn setting up the tally that set the score at 9-5 JCU after three.

Lombardo doubled the lead to five with an early netter, and the Blue Streaks' defense continued to play strong to keep the game out of reach. Zarek helped the cause further with a nice goal in a tight window. Wooster didn't surrender, scoring back-to-back goals, but JCU kept things rolling. Camden Uchic raced down the field on a clear and found Morrell for a key goal to stop the run. Zarek ended the scoring letter to set the final score.

Morrell finished with a hat trick, while Lombardo, Morrissey, Fiorella, and Zarek all finished with two goals. Alexander Sykas led the team with 6 groundballs. Jon Gaglio made 13 saves.
