Baseball Splits with Calvin to Open Florida Trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Hot starts were the key to the Florida opening series.

While John Carroll and Calvin battled it out on the hardwood in University Heights, the Blue Streaks and Knights played a couple baseball games down in Florida.

Early runs decided both the first and second games. The Blue Streaks dominated the first game, 9-5, before the Knights took a turn winning by a big margin in the second game, 9-1.

Game 1
A massive early start keyed things for the Blue Streaks.

Sean Connolly and Jack Harmon clubbed RBI singles in the first. Harmon came around to score on an errant throw by the Calvin catcher on a JCU attempted steal. So after just one frame, the Blue Streaks strolled ahead, 3-0. And the lead grew in the second, as Logan LaMere doubled down the right field line to score Erik Daugenti. LaMere later scored on a Michael Persichetti RBI groundout.

With a 5-0 lead to work with, Maxwell Schumaker allowed a couple unearned runs in the third. But it didn't matter.

JCU crossed three more in the fourth. A Persichetti double really got things rolling, but more fun followed with a Connolly RBI groundout and a Connor Mayle RBI single to left. Schumacher departed after the fifth following a couple more runs allowed, but the 8-4 lead was plenty.

If it wasn't enough, an RBI grounder by Matt Armstrong provided one more insurance run in the sixth. Henry Darrow closed things out with a scoreless seventh.

Persichetti, Connolly, and Daugenti all finished with two-hit days, providing half of the RBIs.

Game 2
The second contest was a mirror reversal of the opener, with the Knights roaring out of the gates.

Calvin crossed two runs in the first and four in the second, getting to the Blue Streaks early. John Carroll did tally a run in the third, but it was not enough.

The Knights kept on rolling in the fourth, scoring three more runs.

Jamon Higley was charged with the loss in the defeat. Five Blue Streaks tallied hits in the 9-1 loss.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will be back at it on Sunday against a familiar foe. John Carroll faces off with #13 Aurora, who bounced JCU from the NCAA Division III Tournament a year ago.
