Purple Raiders Upend Women's Basketball in the DeCarlo Center

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In the OAC TV game of the week, the Blue Streaks hosted the Purple Raiders of Mount Union. Throughout the matchup, it was a constant battle for the lead.

After a strong start to the game, the Blue Streaks were eventually overpowered by the Mount Union offense. The final score of 63-58 favored the Purple Raiders.

John Carroll dropped to 7-8 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, remaining fifth in the league standings.

Ava Ryncarz opened the first quarter on a hot note with a deep three-pointer. Carrying that momentum, John Carroll fought to gain the lead and hold on throughout the quarter. The pressure from both team's defense made for a low scoring quarter, but the Blue Streaks were able to capitalize on defensive rebounds and create scoring opportunities. Combined, John Carroll tallied eight defensive rebounds and four steals. Pushing the offense forward was Halle Landies, who led the offense with seven points.

At the end of the first quarter, John Carroll led by one point, with a score of 16-15.

In the second quarter, a spark grew within the Blue Streaks and the offense came to life. At the free throw line, John Carroll continued to build on the opportunities by shooting 100%. Ryncarz worked relentlessly to limit second chance shots by Mount Union and collected 5 defensive rebounds.

The momentum continued to swing in favor of the Blue Streaks. In the minutes Katie Zatta was on the court, she earned a three-pointer and slowed down the offensive drives from the Purple Raiders. John Carroll's defense forced Mount Union to use the entirety of their shot clock on multiple occasions and brought in an additional eight defensive rebounds.

Due to immense defensive efforts, John Carroll kept Mount Union to only 5 points. Therefore, the lead continued to grow in favor of the Blue Streaks and the half ended with a score of 28-20.

Moving into the third quarter, Ryncarz again started the scoring drive for the Blue Streaks. Ryncarz continued to dominate against the Mount Union offense and brought in another 5 rebounds to make it a double-double. Although the Blue Streaks' defense continued to stay strong, a refreshed Mount Union offense stepped onto the court in the second half.

Out of the ten points scored by the Blue Streaks in the third, Abigail Rosol and Ryncarz accounted for eight (four apiece). Even though the Purple Raiders outscored the Blue Streaks by five points, John Carroll continued to hold the lead with a score of 38-35.

Within the final quarter of the game, Maddie Pietrowski and Ryncarz pushed the Blue Streaks forward. Combined, the duo earned 11 points and an assist. Landies and Rosol contributed an additional six points to John Carroll's offensive push. Even though the Blue Streaks continued to put good numbers on the board, the Raiders tirelessly applied pressure on the offense and eventually tied the game at 52-52.

Despite the strong efforts from John Carroll, Mount Union was able to take control of the game in the late stages with clutch shots and free throws. The final quarter proved to be the best for the offenses, but the Purple Raiders did the better job of finding ways to get the ball in the basket. While the Blue Streaks fought back to close out the game, they ultimately fell short with a final score of 63-58.

Ava Ryncarz set two season highs in tonight's matchup with 13 rebounds and three steals, plus her 16 points. Ryncarz continues to have a remarkable season.

Taking to the road this coming weekend, the Blue Streaks will travel to Marietta College for another conference matchup.
