Women's Lacrosse Drops "Season Opener" at Oberlin

OBERLIN – After Saturday's scheduled season opener vs. Kenyon was called due to weather after only a little more than a quarter, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse officially opened 2024 on Wednesday.

The Blue Streaks traveled west to face off with future North Coast Athletic Conference rival Oberlin College. A 9-0 run for the Yeowomen proved vital.

John Carroll dropped the opening game to Oberlin at Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex and Dick Bailey Field, 16-10.

While the hosts scored the opening goal, the Blue Streaks did not lack offense in the early going. Vivian Rung nabbed two goals in the span of 36 seconds. Riley Knapp provided the assist on the first goal, then helped set things up with a draw control, with Olivia Hanulak getting the assist shortly after the DC.

Midway through the first, Hanulak found twine off a helper from Kendall Gessner. But from there, Oberlin notched eight straight goals, aided by cards assessed to the Blue Streaks. Five of the goals occurred on the woman-up, and two came on free positions. With 25 seconds left in the half, Gessner stopped the bleeding, aided by Rung.

And so, the Blue Streaks entered the break with a 10-4 deficit.

John Carroll did a nice job in the second half in preventing any more Oberlin runs. But unfortunately, JCU couldn't string together more than two goals in a row, either.

The teams traded goals to start the third, with Hanulak and Gessner doing the trick for JCU. The Yeowomen responded with a pair of goals in a row, but JCU thundered in response. Kathleen Cagney found twine off a Hanulak assist, and then Hanulak made it a hat trick (the third of her career) to slim the margin to five with 2:24 left in the third. A late Oberlin tally proved critical, stretching the score to 14-8 heading into the fourth.

John Carroll got some chances in the fourth quarter, with promising possessions. Gessner scored a pair of impressive goals, showing off some spin moves along the way. But the Yeowomen did enough on defense to stave off any JCU comeback.

Gessner tallied 5 points with 4 goals and 1 assist, while Hanulak's 5 points tied a career high. Jill McDonnell and Kathleen Cagney tied for the team lead with 3 groundballs. Hanulak and Knapp each tallied 2 caused turnovers, while Cagney and Hanulak each achieved 5 draw controls. Josephine Lawler and Rachel Kroeger each made four saves, splitting the time evenly in net.

Oberlin enjoyed a 22-15 advantage in groundballs, 22-15, and made 3-of-5 free-position shots while JCU went 0-for-4.

John Carroll will return to action on Tuesday, as the Blue Streaks will host the College of Wooster in a 6 pm showdown at Don Shula Stadium.
