Blue Streaks Go Cold vs. Ohio Northern in First Loss of the Season

JCU fell into an early hole and couldn't climb out of it

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS –  Sometimes the ball just doesn't go in the basket.

The Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center hosted the first home Ohio Athletic Conference game of the season for John Carroll Women's Basketball on Saturday. John Carroll was looking to extend their undefeated streak, while Ohio Northern was hoping to get over .500 after three straight losses to Top 25 teams.

The Polar Bears' strong defensive efforts helped hand the Blue Streaks their first loss of the season.

Ohio Northern came out and stifled the Blue Streaks' offense from the start. The Polar Bears kept them out of the paint and forced six turnovers in the first quarter. Both offenses started off slow, but Mackenzie Suprano brought a spark for the Polar Bears.

With about seven minutes to go in the quarter, Ohio Northern went on a 10-0 run, which included threes from Suprano and Layla Dials. The first quarter ended with Ohio Northern leading 19-2.

JCU started to get stops, but the offensive struggles continued in the second. A three from Courtney Sumner extended the Polar Bears' lead to 25-2 with about 6:30 to go. The Blue Streaks found a little bit of offense later in the period, as Ava Ryncarz crossed over into the lane for a floater and Carmen Heuker followed up with a three. Ohio Northern enjoyed a dominant lead at halftime, 33-8.

In the third, JCU started to play with more pace. The hosts used their full court pressure to speed the game up and get open court opportunities. The Blue Streaks found some momentum later in the quarter with a 7-0 run.

Fast break layups from Ryncarz and Abigail Rosol, followed by a three from Brooke Laub forced a timeout. The Blue Streaks trailed 39-24 with four minutes to go. As much as they tried, the Blue Streaks could not narrow the gap much, trailing 45-29 at the end of the third quarter.

The Blue Streaks continued to fight in the fourth, but their efforts weren't enough to come out on top.  JCU started to limit the turnovers but they just couldn't maintain consistency offensively. Abi Akamine and Suprano scored back-to-back buckets to extend the Polar Bears lead and shut down any hopes of a comeback. Ohio Northern ended the game on top, 55-41.

Ava Ryncarz led the scoring for John Carroll, contributing 14 points. JCU's cold shooting was the story, as John Carroll finished 23.2% from the field. ONU outscored JCU in the paint, 28-10.
