Puerto Rico Trip Ends in Defeat for Women's Basketball

JCU's cold shooting led to a loss to Carthage College

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico – The start of the Puerto Rico Clasico was a thrill for John Carroll Women's Basketball, but cold shooting took away some of the fun down the stretch.

While the Blue Streaks fired out in the early goings of their second and final game in Puerto Rico, Carthage College (WI) responded with a killer second half, stifling JCU's hopes of coming home with two wins.

John Carroll will return home with an 8-2 record following the 69-54 defeat at Coliseo Roger Mendoza.

An Ava Ryncarz triple in the first minute of the game seemed to hint at good tidings for JCU. More success from behind the arc and a couple layups late in the quarter delivered a nice lead for the Blue Streaks after the first, 22-15.

A Graci Semptimphelter 3-pointer early in the second quarter stretched the margin to nine. Near the midpoint, Ryncarz buried another triple to keep the lead hovering at nine. Good work at the free throw line helped JCU remain ahead by multiple possessions heading into the break, 39-31.

But the Firebirds roared to start the second half, stealing the lead back with an 8-0 run. Ryncarz staunched the bleeding with a couple free throws, but Carthage kept up the fight. The Firebirds rolled to an 11-0, and stayed ahead by nine entering the fourth quarter, 53-44.

JCU's cold shooting kept up in the fourth quarter, allowing Carthage to keep the Blue Streaks out of arm's reach. JCU managed 10 points in the final stanza, but it was not enough to mount a comeback.

Carthage shot 57.4% for the game, including an unstoppable 9-of-11 in the third quarter. JCU finished just 30.6% from the field, including 5-of-28 from behind the arc. The Firebirds, of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, outscored the Streaks in the paint, 38-20.

Ava Ryncarz paced the Blue Streaks with 19 points, following by Graci Semptimphelter with 14. A bright spot for John Carroll proved to be on the offensive glass, as JCU secured 19 offensive rebounds, second most in a game this season.

Next Up
John Carroll will be off until after Christmas. The Blue Streaks return to the hardwood on Sunday, December 29 at Kent State.
