Women's Basketball Keeps Rolling, Beating SUNY Fredonia

The Blue Streaks picked up a fifth straight non-conference win

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The dominance in non-conference play continued on Saturday for John Carroll Women's Basketball.

The Blue Streaks conquered their fifth straight foe to open the season, doing so on the road, all by double digits.

In a strong effort from start to finish, John Carroll conquered the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils, 78-57.

In the opening two minutes of the ballgame, John Carroll burst out to an 8-0 lead, including 3-pointers by Ava Ryncarz and Graci Semptimphelter. By the two-minute mark, Fredonia clawed back to even at 12-all, but JCU finished the quarter on a 5-0 run with a triple by Ryncarz.

The second quarter was all Blue Streaks. Semptimphelter scored the first six points of the stanza, but plenty others contributed in a fantastic effort. JCU outscored the Blue Devils in the second, 22-5. The visitors possessed a dominant 39-17 advantage entering the second half.

The deep shot kept calling in the third. Carmen Heuker hit a pair while Daylan Baker also sank one. Fredonia cut into the lead slightly, 55-37 by quarter's end. But this day belonged to JCU.

Just to be sure, Heuker, Brooke Laub, Ella Neitzel all nailed treys in the final quarter.

John Carroll's 3-point efforts have been noted above, but the 12 made 3-pointers mark the third time this season that JCU has hit double-digits in triples. But JCU was far from one-dimensional, cashing in on 22 second-chance points and 23 points off turnovers.

Heuker heralded the offense with a career-high 18 points. But this was not a one-woman show, as Ryncarz and Kaylie McKenney both reached double figures. Plus, JCU scored 35 bench points.
