Volleyball Upended by Purple Raiders in Fierce Battle at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The John Carroll Women's Volleyball team put up an intense fight against Mount Union in their matchup tonight at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Blue Streaks ultimately lost 3-1, making their record for the season 12-5.

JCU fought hard with many long volleys especially late, but fell by set scores of 27-29, 16-25, 25-22, 24-26.

Much like last year, Mount Union and John Carroll traded points in the first set. A fantastic kill from Hailey Williams allowed the Blue Streaks to finally take the lead 7-6. However, a kill by Mount Union and mistakes made by the Blue Streaks let the Purple Raiders get back in the lead, scoring 4 points in a row. With more errors from John Carroll, and very few from Mount Union, the Purple Raiders kept their lead 19-16. The Blue Streaks were determined to close that gap, and with a kill from Jessica Liddle and one from Abby Bednar, as well as a block by the pair, they were able to tie the score 20-20. Much like the beginning, the score was kept very tight between the teams. Key plays from Bednar and Natalie Glowe saved the Blue Streaks to keep up with Mount Union 24-24. It's win by two, and after Mount Union took the first lead 25-24, and then 26-25, a kill by Williams tied it up 26-26. With a kill from Mount Union and an error from the Blue Streaks, the Purple Raiders ended the first set 29-27.

Starting off the second set, Mount Union took the early lead 6-2, with errors made by the Blue Streaks. An amazing kill by Bednar and then Williams gave the Blue Streaks room to catch up making the score 7-6. Another kill from Willams plus a service ace by Liddle, put the Blue Streaks in the lead, 9-8. Every point was an intense battle between each team, keeping the score very close. Four kills in a row by the Purple Raiders put them in the lead with a solid margin. With mistakes from the Blue Streaks and multiple kills by the Purple Raiders, Mount Union still held a major lead, 19-11. John Carroll put a few points on the board, but was unable to make a comeback against Mount Union. A kill from the Purple Raiders closed out the second set, 25-16.

John Carroll took the early lead in the third set, 4-2, but soon enough the Purple Raiders came back and stole the lead back. A kill by Liddle and one by Mary Kate Sheehan gave the Blue Streaks the lead back, 8-7. Once again, each point was a fight between the teams to stay in the lead, the score being tied up often. Mount Union and John Carroll traded kills, neither able to get much traction, the score going back and forth until it was 14-14. The Blue Streaks were able to get two points ahead with a kill by Kallan Hrics and a service ace by Tess Humphrey. John Carroll was able to stay in the lead, but Mount Union was always a point behind. The Blue Streaks were determined to win back the set, and they kept Mount Union on their toes when they took a bigger lead, 22-18. With a kill by Williams, the Blue Streaks closed out the set 25-22.

Starting off the fourth set, kills by Hrics, Liddle, and Bednar put the Blue Streaks ahead 4-3. Williams had another kill and then a service ace from Bednar gave John Carroll a 7-4 margin. Several kills and good plays by John Carroll allowed them to stay in the lead. However, Mount Union fought back and was able to get three kills as well as taking advantage of a John Carroll mistake to snatch an 11-9 advantage. The Purple Raiders capitalized on John Carroll's errors and used their own momentum to make the score 18-11. A kill by Bednar gave room for John Carroll to get some points on the board. With multiple errors from the Purple Raiders, John Carroll was able to take advantage of this and made the score 22-19, slowly closing in on the gap. After a battle back and forth, John Carroll finally claimed another point. Then Liddle, with a service ace, made it 23-22. Sheehan had a key kill and then an error by Mount Union to tie the score 24-24. But the Purple Raiders got two kills in a row to claim the fourth and final set, 26-24.

Williams stuck out with her play tonight, recording 18 kills. Haley Nicholson registered 24 assists, Humphrey following closely behind with 23. Freshman Olivia Mogyordy led the way for both teams in digs, recording a season-best 36, followed closely by Williams with 31.
