Volleyball Drops Penultimate OAC Match at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE – Otterbein's offense proved to be too much for John Carroll Volleyball to handle on Wednesday evening in the Rike Center.

Despite a solid battle from the Blue Streaks, the Cardinals won the 13th straight in the series between the two teams, breaking a tie near the top of the Ohio Athletic Conference standings.

With the defeat, John Carroll stands at 5-3 in conference play with one match left to go. The Blue Streaks are no longer in contention for a top-two seed, but still have a chance at a home game for the OAC Tournament Quarterfinal. JCU has clinched a spot in the tournament.

Otterbein's offense revved things up in the opening set, as the Cardinals recorded a .316 attack percentage in the first set. Four straight kills by the Cardinals to open the match set the tone, though JCU did sneak ahead soon after, 7-5. But near the midpoint, Otterbein notched a key 5-1 run to get ahead, 15-11. The hosts' offense continued to thrive down the stretch, taking the opener with ease, 25-19.

The teams battled evenly at the start of the second set, but again, Otterbein provided a strong run. This time, it was a 7-2 run to gallop ahead to 16-10. JCU could not string together a long enough run to mount a comeback. Otterbein's offense proved to be too strong in the late goings, emerging with a 25-17 conquest.

Not eager to make the two-hour trip home empty-handed, the Blue Streaks battled back in the third. After an even start, a 4-point JCU jaunt led Otterbein to call a timeout with the visitors ahead, 17-13. Otterbein battled back to with two points and then one, but errors by the hosts proved costly, as JCU was all too happy to take advantage, en route to a 25-22 win. JCU's offense was much more effective, with 14 kills, including a couple key ones late by Abby Bednar

The fourth set again saw the Cardinals grab momentum at the midpoint of the set. A 7-2 run led to JCU calling a timeout, trailing 17-12. The strategy session didn't work, as Otterbein scored two straight and JCU burned its second timeout. While the Blue Streaks battled late, Otterbein finished it off, 25-18.

Abby Bednar guided the offense with 13 kills, followed closely by Mary Kate Sheehan with 11 (who also notched 4 block assists). Tess Humphrey and Haley Nicholson each registered 16 assists. Olivia Mogyordy tabbed 30 digs.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will conclude conference play on Saturday, hosting Ohio Northern for Alumnae Day at 1 pm. With a win, JCU clinches a home game for the OAC Tournament Quarterfinal. A loss would likely make JCU the #5 seed with a roadtrip for the quarterfinal.
