Men's Soccer Defeated by Otterbein in Final Home Contest of the Regular Season

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On an unusually warm late October evening, the Blue Streaks hosted the Otterbein Cardinals in what will be the last regular season Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer match played at Don Shula Stadium.

Tonight's match was crucial for both teams, as John Carroll was looking to improve its chances at clinching a share of the OAC regular season title, while Otterbein was looking to stay alive for the tournament.

In a game that featured very little scoring and two Blue Streaks individually having more shots on goal than all of the Cardinals, ultimately, it was Otterbein that would head home with a 1-0 victory.

The first 15 minutes of the game saw the two teams trading possession, with neither team managing to get off a shot on goal.

In the 19th minute, the Blue Streaks finally seemed to have a chance, but the Cardinals escaped after a shot by Nicholas Graeca went wide and out of play.

In the 28th minute, John Carroll had another chance and a beautiful shot off the left foot of Jaden Wright was miraculously saved by the Otterbein goalkeeper to prevent the Blue Streaks from opening the scoring.

In the 40th minute, the Cardinals seemed to have a promising chance but the shot went high, allowing the Blue Streaks to escape. A minute later, John Carroll responded with a chance of their own which ended with a Jack Foht shot that went wide left.

A quick chance by the Blue Streaks in the final seconds wasn't able to lead to anything, resulting in the teams going into the half tied, 0-0.

In the 52nd minute, Otterbein seemed to have an easy goal after a cross into a header fooled the Blue Streak goalkeeper, but was saved by Nick Mikulec.

The Blue Streaks responded with a strong attack with shots on goal by Nicholas Graeca and Hayden Haffner, both of which were saved by the Cardinal goalkeeper, halting any hopes of scoring. In the 64th minute, the Blue Streaks had yet another chance, but a shot by Wright missed the goal by a matter of inches giving the ball back to Otterbein.

In the 73rd minute, a fierce Otterbein attack resulted in a goal that just barely crossed the line to open the scoring and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Silver Abraham did the honors for his second goal of the season.

In the 78th minute, the Blue Streaks had their most promising chance of the night coming off a corner kick, but the Otterbein defense did an immaculate job managing to save all three shots on goal that were attempted in a span of 16 seconds. The Blue Streaks kept the pressure on and a Logan Penton shot off of a free kick was just barely saved by the Cardinal goalkeeper to end the threat.

Wright got a shot on goal in the 85th minute, but it was saved, and 20 seconds later, a shot by Hayden Haffner missed high. The final minutes consisted of John Carroll controlling the possession but not being able to get a proper chance.

An amazing effort by the Cardinal goalkeeper and his surrounding cast prevented the Blue Streaks from getting on the scoreboard before the clock expired.
