Scoring Outburst Propels Women's Basketball Past The Berg

TIFFIN – After 2023 ended with three straight wins for John Carroll Women's Basketball, 2024 is off to a rousing start.

The Blue Streaks dominated from wire-to-wire in an 87-50 conquest of the Heidelberg Student Princes to begin the new year.

John Carroll now pops above .500 in Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 3-2 mark.

No signs of rust were evident early in the contest for John Carroll. The Blue Streaks got off the bus ready to roll, bursting out to a 9-0 lead. Heidelberg got on the board with a free throw at 7:03 but did not convert a shot from the field til 5:43, allowing the Blue Streaks to build a nice early lead. Kaylie McKenney helmed the offense early, while Ava Ryncarz hit some nice shots, including a jumper with two seconds left in the first to set the score at 20-12 JCU after one.

All things went the Blue Streaks' way in the second quarter, as the visitors enjoyed a 22-7 advantage. Maddie Pietrowski got the party started in the paint, while Halle Landies and Katie Zatta added to the festivities with three-pointers near the midway mark. Landies and Zatta both hit triples down the stretch, as well, pushing the Clevelanders to a 42-19 lead at the break.

The usual suspects provided the offense in the second half, with Abigail Rosol making plenty of noise, too. The Blue Streaks kept the foot on the gas pedal, preventing any hopes of a Heidelberg comeback. A notable highlight occurred down the stretch for Quinn Benchley, as the freshman drained her first collegiate three-pointer.

Ava Ryncarz tied a career high with 22 points to lead all scorers. Kaylie McKenney excelled with a career best 16 points, adding 7 points. Maddie Pietrowski, Halle Landies, and Abigail Rosol all tallied 10 points. Landies impressed on defense with 3 steals.

John Carroll led just about all stat categories, most especially points in the paint (48-24) and points off turnovers (27-8). JCU shot quite well, hitting 48% from the field and 38.9% from deep in the team's best scoring outburst since tallying 89 in an upset home win over Baldwin Wallace on February 15.

The Blue Streaks return to the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Saturday, hosting the Capital Comets for a 2 pm tip-off.
